Has my truck been Smarty'd?

Since I bought my truck used, how would I know if it had been loaded with a programmer like a Smarty? The way I understand it, the software is just loaded into the ecm and is undetectable right?

The reason I ask is that my truck smokes way more than I thought a newer truck should when I'm on it a little. It puts out a pretty good cloud if I give it half throttle. It definitely smokes more than any of the previous cummins trucks I've had except for maybe my first '93 with a maxed out pump.

The truck doesn't feel rediculously powerful but definitely healthy. I'm gonna check for codes in the morning and maybe I'll have a look at the turbo. I'm a little worried that it won't pass emissions, I gotta have that done next week to get plates.

One way to tell: put it on a dyno & see how much HP & torque.

Judging by your smoke comment, I suspect that you may not have a power adder, but just bigger injector nozzles.

It could also be that you have a boost leak - not enough air to go with the commanded fuel.

I checked the codes today and got p0514. Did a search, found out it's a battery temp sensor code, no big deal.

I'll look at the turbo and check for boost leaks this weekend.

Today I floored it for the first time since I got it (yeah, I know but I've been trying to get good mileage). Man, this thing really moves for a big ole dually
I don't know if it's stock or not but I'm impressed.

I'm hoping that when I get the emissions done they'll be able to tell me the hp/tq numbers.

You gotta do emissions in CO on a diesel? WOW!
Check you air filter & intercooler boots for leaks.

Not unless Co is different than AZ & Ca. They only put a load on the chassis (motor) and check for emissions. The numbers may be there, but they don't publish or release.
