Growling at 45mph HELP
Growling at 45mph HELP
I have a 2005 Dually 4x4 with 147000 miles on it. I have had it since new.Recently I put 4 new balljoints in (4th time). I also put in a new wheel bearing on the passenger side. I notice at that time I had a dented lower control arm. So i purchased two new adjustable ones. I had no problems until they were installed. Then the growling started. It was normal until I hit 45 mph(like I was rolling on 40" swampers).I then replaced the driver side wheel bearing and outer u joint. The noise is still there. It changes when Im in 4wd but its still there. All my fluids are full. So I did a search on here. And I pulled my front driveshaft this morning. The noise is completely gone without the shaft in place. The shaft and joints are original parts. I never greased the cardone joint. The problem is this. The u joints and shaft show no signs of any failure of any kind, The rubber boot that surrounds the ball is dry rotted and shows signs of very small cracking, but it is still plyable. Do I spend $350 on a new replacement shaft or is my problem elsewhere.I have a 1 piece rear shaft. And as I said without the front driveshaft in place the truck is smooth as silk. Any advice would be great.Oh I also rotated the tires Thanks
I may just do that. But the only part of the shaft that shows any sign of wear is the ball and socket in the part of the shaft with the two u joints. I have had three guys look at the shaft and all are in agreement that all the joints are good. Unless a joint can seem fine but its not good when its spinning at speed. But none are sloppy and none are tight.
Those CV joints can be repaired or replaced.

If you lose the rubber boot, the joint will fail immediately afterwards because of contamination. I would think the joint is replaceable without replacing the entire assy. Please let us know what the solution was.
I was able to get grease into the ball and socket. I also set my adjustable control arms to the factory length. I had them a 1/2" longer because I have a leveling kit on this truck since new.And I read to lengthen the lower control arm to center the front wheels. I re installed the drive shaft and its as good as new. No noise at all. I assume that the small adjustment that I made on the adjustable control arms changed the pinion angle enough to cause a vibration. The only point I was able to feel anything unusual was in the ball and socket. It had the slightest resistance outside of the central point. So if you put a leveling kit on your truck and dont put adjustable control arms on at the same time,I would guess you will have problems. I think that if I would have put a new rebuilt drive shaft on the truck,my vibration would have gone away.Hope this helps someone in the future.
