Going to buy 04 CTD, what to look out for
I accidently posted this in 2007 and up. Re posting it here.

Planning on buying an 04 3500 CTD QC Dually 4wd, auto. It has approx 70,000mi right now. It is in good condition, except small crack in dually fender, few small scratches on hood. What should I look for when going to buy it? What usually breaks, leaks, etc. I've heard that you should get a better fuel system? What about the auto trans? I tow a fair amount, usually loads >10,000lbs. It is all stock and has been treated well. My friend bought it in 06with 35,000miles, now he is going to get a new one and sell this one to me this spring.
I don't know if it is 04 or 04.5, Can someone tell me why this makes a difference? More HP?

I have a early 04 one ton4x4 off road and tow a lot with heavy loads in tough areas.
from my humble opinion sir? I would really check the wear on the front end- bearings shims, get a tracker bar or something. I would test drive to see any wobble. if it eats tires, that sort of thing. they changed the flow routing of the later 04s with the injectors getting different nozzles but that just may be a local thing here in NY. I know that my NAVigation radio just has the turns on it- later ones have the actual maps. change out the tranny filter and adjust the bands. Let the knowledgable guys chime in- they are here and the help is PHENOMINAL !!! love this site!

to check to see if it is a 04 or 04.5 there is a sticker on the driver side valve cover. The 04.5 was rated for 325HP and 600 ftLB. Also if still orignal exhaust will have a cat on it. The regular 04 had 305HP and 555ftLB. Just due a normal service on it when you get it. Fluids and Filters.
