If it's an auto, check the tranny fluid. Check for codes. '98.5 to 2002's had lift pump issues that in turned causes injector pump issues. Check not only for codes, but check the fuel pressure at the injection pump. That will be a good indicator as to strenght of the lift pump.
That and drive it to hwy speed if 4x4 (in 2wd) to check the front shaft ujoints. Mine were bad and I bought it from a dealer with 50,000 you will hear a bad joint at 60+mph if they are starting to go.
Good luck.
Good luck.
I just bought an '01 and looked through probably 3 dozen threads about "what to look out for" and came up with the following:
-53 block
-VP44 issues/low pump pressures/PO216 codes
(should get at least 15 psi idle/5psi WOT)
-front end steering and suspension parts inlcluding:
upper and lower BJ's
track bars
just crawl under the car, make sure they have grease on 'em, and yank on stuff to see if it's tight
-head gasket leaks at front left corner when looking into engine bay
-KDP damage on timing cover
-turbo shaft endplay
-front inner fender well rust
I had a few more written down but I threw away my list since I already bought one....
Just search the word "buying" in 2nd gen and 24V forums and youll get lots of reading material. I sure did!

All of the above is good info, except, the KDP issue is 12 valve thing. And just "yanking" on the trackbar isn't enough to determind if it's bad. Fire up the engine and while you're laying under the front bumper, have someone turn the steering wheel from lock to lock. Look for anything "popping" or just being sloppy. The trackbar will "pop" around where it meets the frame. (if it's bad).
