Ghost of the lift pump

Well, it finally went out. At 91,456 (key here is under 100k). Yesterday driving north on I-15 coastin down the hill into Temecula and noticed that the truck went mighty quiet. Shifted into neutral and watched the tach drop to zero. Luckily I was in the number three lane and just had to get over one lane to make it to the shoulder. Called roadside service and had it taken to the dealership. Talked to the service guy and when we were at the truck (he was getting vin and odometer info) we had the hood up and one of the mechanics came up to us. Said he was a diesel tech. I told him that the lift pump had gone south on me and he pointed to the engine and said 'you dont' want that to be the problem, those are expensive.' I looked where he was pointing and it was the injection pump. I said 'you're right, they are. Luckily it's not the CP3, but the lift pump there behind the fuel filter.' And these guys work on our trucks? Went back to the service booth to sign my paperwork and noticed the note that there was one safety recall out for my truck. The dreaded 'I'm an idiot and don't know if my truck is in park' alarm. I asked the service guy if they were federally obligated to perform this service and he said yes. Asked him if there was any way that they could overlook this notice and he said he'd see what he could do. So don't know if they will do it or not. I told him that I had the recall notice and if (big if) I ever sold or traded the truck in I would include the notice to the next owners so they would be aware. While talking about the recall the service advisor was the mechanic how it was done. I jumped in and said that it was just a reflash to the ECM and if it was done a label would be placed on the ECM and also on the radiator support. The mechanic asked me if I worked for DC. Nope I just like to keep myself informed. He said that I was the most informed customer that he'd talked to. Thanks for that. I consider myself to be above the average customer. That and many thanks to the great information on this site.

well lets just hope he doesn't try to replace your injector pump with the lift pump. and say it is just a newer design. it is made to take up less space inder the hood.

No they didn't do that. But here's what they did (or didn't do). Dropped it off on Monday. Called on Tuesday and they had the problem at the lift pump (the right lift pump) and were waiting on approval to do the warrany work. Called again late on Tuesday and they had gotten the approval but wouldn't get to it until Wed. Called Wed afternoon and was told it was being worked on but wouldn't be done that afternoon. Called again Thurs morning and was told that it was still being worked on and would be done that day. Left work early to go by the dealership and when I got there walked to the back to see which bay it was in. Much to my chagrin it was still sitting where it had been parked on Monday. Needless to say, I went and expressed my dissatisfaction with that minute detail. Funny thing is they got it in and got it fixed in a few hours. After I got my paperwork from the cashier I asked to speak to the manager. I expressed my unhappiness with the way I was treated by the service manager. I completly understand that they are busy and understand if they can't get right on my vehicle. I didn't even buy it there (not that that makes much of a difference). But what I don't like is being lied to. Told that my vehicle is being worked on when it's not even been touched (other that figuring out the problem). Well, in 8,500 miles it will be out of warranty and will be my problem from there on out.

Wow, an hour fix took all week? That's nice. It takes more time to take out the inner fender liner than it does to take the lift pump off for pete sakes.

my experience has been that it takes them longer to deal with their 800# than to do the repairs. I've gotten the same run-around from my dealer and am equally miffed.

Funny how I've never gotten a survey on any service they've done... I think they know what I'd say so they make sure no one asks?

So,, on the newer trucks the engine dies when LP goes out?
2nd gens you don't even notice it unless you have a FP gauge.
But I have never had one completely quit, the pressure just drops.
4 of them, so far,,,
