G56 noise, is it about to fail?
Hey all,
When my truck is still cold and it's idling in neutral (clutch out), there is a low whine coming from the transmission. If I push the clutch in, the noise stops, and returns as soon as I let the clutch back out again. Once the truck warms up the noise goes away. Is this a normal noise that I just never noticed before, or is it a sign that I'm about to lose an input shaft bearing or something? The engine and driveline are bone stock and I drive it easy. It has about 76K miles on it.

No it has just a little pressure on it all the time and spins all the time. When you apply more pressure you can take up the slack from a worn bearing and make it stop squeaking. If it is and it gets worse you need to replace it soon or you could do like this guy did. He kept driving and it sees ed to the input collar and then took out the pressure plate. Then he kept driving with out the clutch and wore out the syncros and broke a tooth off of 3rd gear. Instead of needing a throwout bearing we had to rebuild his trans $1700 (NV4500) and new South bend clutch $750 Con FE. Trust me you will know before it gets to this point.

Mine has rattled in fifth and sixth gear since it was new. Absolutely pisses me off, but Dodge wouldn't do anything about it. Now it has started to whine in sixth along with the rattle... Sounds like i'll be rebuilding mine soon
Mine has a noise that you can only hear while pushing in the clutch (kinda like a grinding noise). When the clutch is engaged you can not hear it and when the clutch is disengaged you can can not hear it. I only really notice it if I am really paying attention. Also the truck has to be warmed up to hear it.
I have taken it to a couple of shops, I think it might be a pilot bearing. One shop wanted to replace the clutch and bearings. The other shop thought I should just leave it alone until it changes or gets a little louder. The clutch works great and the shifting is smooth also.
I have changed the fluid but that did not make a difference. For now I am just waiting to it to get a little worse before I drop the money for a clutch, hopefully that is not a mistake.
Does anyone think I am just shooting myself in the foot?
Thanks
Tim

Mine moans and groans all the time, It also rattles in fifth and sixth gear and has since new, changed over to syntec and helped alot but still growls at me all the time. My throw out bearing squeels at me so i'll be getting a clutch soon, also because i just ordered my smarty too
so i'll kill two birds with one stone!
Good luck

Well I just had an independent mechanic look at it (he's my neighbor and has his own shop). He had me push the pedal in and out while he listened underneath, and also tried just slight pressure on the pedal. The noise is definitely a whirring/howling sound like a bad bearing, and not a rattling sound like some of you mention. Anyway, he said there's a chance it might be a throwout bearing, but doubts it. He thinks its an input shaft bearing. He says it sounds like it's in the early stages of failure and that it can wait a week or two (I can't give him the truck right away) and then he's going to dig into it. I'll let you know what he finds out.
Have you ever checked the tranny fluid?
Some of the early G56s came from the factory underfilled...
I was just in one last week with ~86K miles for no reverse - barely got a quart out of it with the PTO covers off.
Cheapest thing you can do right now to help is drain & refill with 6 quarts - be sure to use ATF+4 !!!

Hi XLR8R,
Thanks for the suggestion. Yes, I have checked the fluid recently and it was fine. I change the fluid every 30K miles with 6 quarts of Redline C+ ATF. I fill it right up to the fill-plug which is usually just a tad over 6 quarts. I'm hearing some people lift up the right side of their truck to overfill it. Is this something I should be doing? Could not overfilling it, or using Redline C+ ATF instead of the Mopar fluid, have led to this failure?

Sounds like a good maintenance schedule - not sure about the C+ though; probably is fine, just like ATF+3 would be OK - but I use ATF+4.
Not overfilling wouldn't cause any durability issues.
The fluid always looked good when drained?
Depending on how loud the offending noise is, I doubt I would yank the tranny unless something was broke or about to be.
