Not overfilling wouldn't cause any durability issues.

The fluid always looked good when drained?

Depending on how loud the offending noise is, I doubt I would yank the tranny unless something was broke or about to be.
Ok good to know, thanks. Last time I dropped the fluid (60K, now at 76K) it looked fine, and smelled a little bad. The smell wasn't wretched though, it just smelled bad like used ATF smells. I've smelled fluid from bad trannies before and the stink about makes me .

The tranny still functions fine right now, but I'm going to get it repaired now anyway. I do lots of long distance trips and I'd hate for this to leave me stranded out in the middle of nowhere. The noise is loud enough that my wife, who has no mechanical knowledge, noticed the noise and asked me what it was.

That tells me it's loud enough to worth addressing!

If you do a lot of interstate (high-speed) driving, you might want to invest in a set of our oil coolers.

Tell me more about the oil cooler. You have a link?

Is this a normal noise that I just never noticed before, or is it a sign that I'm about to lose an input shaft bearing or something? The engine and driveline are bone stock and I drive it easy. It has about 76K miles on it.
What ever came of this? I'm dealing with the exact same thing only it's getting louder.

Mine makes a racket in 1st or second at low speeds. With the smf conversion you learn to not lug the trans.
The replacement parts are insanely expensive for the G-56.
