G56 Gear Whine?

I have a new 07 Ram 2500 with the 5.9 CTD and the G56 6-speed manual transmission. I was wondering if it is normal to have some whine in each gear. I'm pretty sure that it is normal and this is my first diesel with a manual transmission. I have around 1,200 miles on the truck now. I talked to a couple of dealers and they said that they were aware of that gear whine and it will go away around 7,000-8,000 miles. I was just curious if any other G-56 owners had any input on this.

Thanks

It has some whine in each gear? It shouldn't. Sure it isn't a differential? Is the sound the same in each gear? Does it vary with rpm or speed?

When dealers hear about whine, they think about warranty work and fighting with DC to get reimbursed - so their typical first response is that the whine is normal and hope you go away.

It's too new to get real worried about yet but you should check your box levels and watch for metal. I heard that "oh, it's normal" crap for so long I finally threatened to get a lawyer before a dealer would fix my grinding reverse. The synchro was not only shot but it got the gear too, it was so bad! I had a little gear rattle til I put an extra qt. of lube in it. These engines are getting so quiet, you hear all the other stuff. Craig

The sound is pretty similar in each gear. It is most noticeable in 2nd. The sound varies with RPM. Just for curiosity, I went and drove another new one tonight and it did not have near the whine that mine has. I'm going to take mine to the dealer in the morning to see what they can find out.

Mine has a whine, too. I had hoped it was normal. 4k miles of the truck.

Well I just got back from the dealer and they said there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. The more I listen to the noise, I'm wondering if it has something to do with the turbo and the air going into it. I can hear the normal high pitched turbo whistle, but this noise is a lower whine and it seems to change exactly with the turbo boost. If it was really gear whine, I think it would be more consistent with the speed.

My pard has got an '06 with the G56 (17K miles) and the last time I rode in it I heard what sounds like an abnormal whine which I hadn't heard before. I told him he better start looking for a NV5600 for a replacement and he told me to self edited and forget about it!
