I have never had that happen but the first 500 miles mine seemed stiff downshifting into 2nd....I just chalked it up to break-in........

I dont think it was bigd I was reffering to. The guy I was talkin about replaced his g56 with a nv5600. I think he said it was about 2"s longer and other than that it more or less bolted in.

Maybe there's others, but bigd6.6 was indeed the one.

I have heard of a stock G-56 going out, but I heard it from a Ford fan, so I wonder what was left out of the equation. "Well he only floored it first then dumped the clutch while trying to move 42,000 lbs in 3rd gear".

10K on mine pulling Fifth Wheels, not a shutter once. I did smoke the clutch once when I dropped it hard and nailed it. Got to almost 3700 rpm in 3rd before I realized my speed didn't match the rpm. I backed off and it grabbed and was fine.

As to comparing a trannys quality as to it sled pulling ability, how many of you sled pullers are running a stock 47 or 48re tranny? Bigd6.6, how much HP were you pushing at the time the tranny blew. DC is certifying the tranny for 325hp and 610 torque. Were you within the factory specs? I didn't think so.

23,000 miles on mine and I couldnt be happier. Im not easy on it at all. It has hooked to the sled twice but im only running the BD ram X power on the 180hp setting.

They did have an issue when it was first introduced with the oil level that led to the demise of a few but no other issues.

Mine does make a noise in 6th gear. It sounds like a bearing cage rattling if you take a wheel bearing and spin it in your hand with no grease on it. I dont know what it is but thats why I bought the 05 and not the 06, 7/70 powertrain warranty that will cover the trans!!

I love the way the g-56 is geared for pulling.... Mine pulls much better than the one my dad had with the nv. With the heavy weight we pull I can keep it in 6th on the interstate.... where my dads had to be in 5th. 9000 miles and mine works flawlessly.

I've got 7K on mine, probably 50/50 empty/towing. The first 2-3K it was tight on the downshifts. The pattern is a little sloppy, not always a straight pull back from 5-th to 6th. The other day I was pulling my 4-horse steel bumper pull with 90 sheets of 1/2"plywood on board (whatever that weight is?) and 60-2x6x12's, all the weight was centered overand slightly just fwd of the axles-for a good weight balance. Coming on to really steep grade I decided to downshift from 6th to 5th at 50mph. I heard a funny sound, kind of a squeal and light clunk. I am not sure if it was the tranny, but certainly sounded like it came from the vicinity. I have heard a similar sound before on another truck that had 45K on it, that time it was a u-joint needing replacement. Maybe the same here. I have also heard a similar sound that was a throw out bearing on a truck that needed a new clutch. I am going to pay a lot of attention if I cannot find anything on a visual, hands-on exam. I have driven manual trannys all my life and get lots more mileage than others out of my clutches. I have also greased that litttle ball fitting 3-4 times, what a pain that thing is - gotta find something better in a replacement down line when it goes.

I have read where several people discovered the tranny was not correctly filled by factory/dealers, I am going to check that too. Seems you have to elevate one side of the truck when filling the tranny to get it right? Not sure about this idea. I know the manual suggests the tranny oil be changed at 15K, but I am now considering changing it earlier, like at 10K, and using Amsoil. I may even add the Fast Coolers if they offer them for my tranny while I'm at it - more fluid capacity and some cooling capabilities.

I am certainly not sled pulling and do not do the racing stuff, so my expectations are at least in the range that my old 5-speed Ford tranny has given me in service. It is still on the road at 218K, just put in it's second clutch at 185K, and it does ranch chores every day of the week.

Yes i had a 5600 in my 06 for a couple weeks but the mechanics at my dealer wanted me to bring my truck in to get my original tranny warrantied so i did and they did the 2nd tranny lasted 300 miles so in a sense yes they are junk I am not running near the power a lot of guys are with 5600s and they just seem to keep going.
