G56 Applicationd

Anyone have any history on this tranny. Was it made for the Ram truck. Is it used in any other vehicles. Seems to work well in my 06. Only smelled clutch once starting up my very steep driveway in 4th with my foot completley off the accelerator.
Thanx Phil

Was made for light to midrange Mercedes trucks in Europe. Was first built in 2002 & manufactured in Brazil. The fact that it ended up in our trucks was less to do with the fact that it was a perfect fit for the Cummins and more to do with the fact that the New Venture / DiamlerChrysler NV5600 arrangement ended in Jan of 2005. The G56 is more stout than the NV5600 even though the NV5600 has a steel case and the G56 is aluminum. The G56 does have the dual mass flywheel and this has been the subject of debate as it relates to a potential weakness. The G56 overall has been subjected to extensive heavy service before ever being installed in Dodge Cummins as over 250,000 units were put into service from 2002 to 2005 in light and midrange trucks.....

People were skeptical of the G56 when it replaced the NV5600 in 1/2005 but since then there have been few complaints other than the .79 final drive ratio.

A teardown was performed by Bluementhals and documented in TDR a couple of issues ago if you want more info.

The Germans put this xmission in trucks up to 12 tons?

I like the heavy duty new big old manual, its the plastic clutch peddle and drive by wire accelorator peddle that bugs the crap out of me!
