G 56 question

Ok I am not much of a gear head so dont hate me but what would the cost and headache be like to change the inards of the g56 to the newer final ratios in comparison to changin out the ring and pinions?

1 would it be cost effective?

2 would you have to change all the guts or could you just change the 6th gear?

I am considering the 3.42s eventhough I already have 35s I think it would basically give me more room in between shifts especially off the lline where you have to shift out of second so soon.

just looking for aome input from someone who might know something because I just wanna drive.

The 07 5.9's came with a higher geared G-56. Mine was included... My truck was built at the end of December... one of the LAST 5.9's made. It came with the HIGHER 6th gear which makes my RMPs at 70 about 200 lower. THese trannys have the last 2 Letters of the serial number of AE. You could probably look into the cost of buying a new G-56, it's the same 6 speed they use on the 6.7 l trucks as well..

I think it would cheaper to change out the gears then try to re-do the insides of the G56. I don't think you'll be happy with 3.42 and 35'in tires. It will be a real dog! The G56 was built for towing! If your looking for a cruiser your better off with an auto.

well I dont believe in automatic diesels just trying to get some ideas unless they have the new shift your self stuff

the trucks 2nd gen had 3.55s so 3.42s wouldnt be much different just opening up conversation to try and lower my rpmssqeeze a little more mileage and get the most out of my truck

There is a sheet out there which lists the gear ratios for the G56 from 05-06 and then 07 and up. All your gear ratios except 5th are higher. I have heard a few individuals who have the older G56 in their 07's though- so maybe there were a few leftovers.
I have the sheet- will try and find laterl

The AAM anouncement about the 3.42 kit says:
"In pre-2007 pickups the front axle requires a new redesigned differential case along with new side and differential pinion gears"

The 2007s+ have the redesigned axle.

Nitis,
I ran a quick calculation and with the 315's which I assume is around 34.4" tall your new final drive ratio is 3.41 with a 3.73 ring and pinion.
Going to 3.42 RP it will be 3.12 with the 315's.

well I guess it is just what i think my preference is I think i still want to be gear higher.

Mikey have you ever driven one of these g56s? if you havent you really need to in order to appreciate what I am talking about.

And hey maybe it would be a little to high geared but when I get tires next time i step it down a little that would be fine with me getting tired of hoisting my big butt up in the seat anyways.

Nope, but I can easily drive around in 5th gear for the same effect.

With 3.42's I would definately switch to smaller diameter tires.

like I said before it is my preference I think that even with the 35s It is still geared too low for my liking in other words I dont like it so I want to change it. And once again I am not saying that I may not decide to step down a tire size later on but I have to try it all out first.
