G 56 question
my 92 has 35" tires and 3.54 gears with an Nv4500.... I think the final drive gearing is perfect.
My 07 has the 3.73s and I now I need to check that serial number... i bet i have the older low gear OD in my G56... I ordered mine in late November, and it was picked up a couple days befor 01/01/07.
but I think that with some taller tires it will be perfect.
I think these gearing preferances have a lot to do with how fast you like to cruise at on the freeway.

It just so happens I'm sitting here at the dealer with my PT cruiser and after reading this I decided to check the lot to see if they had one. They do and I drove it. I noticed the truck runs about 300rpms lower then my 06. It's definitely longer legged. After driving the 08 with the 3.42s, 6.7, my 06 definitely feels stronger. If you are going to use the truck for a daily driver and tow moditeratly, this is the set up for you.

I was thinking the same thing, I don't really want to go 3.42's, I also don't want to go 35 inch tires either. I think the higher gear set out of the newer G56 would be perfect with 285's for me. It would bring the 75MPH RPM's down, and help out with the MPG's when unloaded. I don't want to lose any towing ability, that's why I bought the dang truck to begin with.
I think I am going to do cause
" I just wanna go fast"
and I really wanna step down a tire size too.
another thing to consider is those new 6 speed manuals are higher geared than the old ones and they have 3.42s so the old with the 3.42s should be a happy medium.

Why not just get a GV overdrive? Yeah I know they they are a bit spendy, but it's got to be near the price of swaping the tranny out or upgrading the final gear. It's probably cheaper to change the gear set or bigger tires, but why not have the best of both worlds?
because of the weakness for us who haul heavy...especially backing up hills, i bought one and returned it before i ever installed it
i back 12-24k up hills quite frequently and after alot of research i realized i would have toasted my GV, especially since i plan to run this truck over 300k

IF you could buy new G56 6th gear I bet you would only spend $200-300 bucks.... thats WAY cheaper then regearing the axles or even bigger tires!!!!
even if it cost $1,000 it would still be the cheapest route.my .02
