Question Fuel stains in driveway, not sure where it's coming from?

Since the rain has sorta let up a bit, I have started to notice a few diesel fuel stains under the truck from what looks like to be coming from the front left side. Any ideas? They seem to be about the size of a penny and are seperated about 1-2 inches apart or roughly in the same location as where I park the truck everyday. Checked the fuel filter drain valve, it was shut. No noticeable oil leaks. What else should I check?

OK, explain what exactly (definition) is a CP3. I'm not a diesel tech. Did a search here, but none explained what a CP3 is.

CP3 is your fuel injection pump, and they are prone to leaking. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but if you search on CP3 you literally will get hours of info. There is a thread going on in this forum right now.

Mine was just replaced at 19,000 miles. Search on Cp3+lift pump, and you will have DAYS of reading.

hey banshee, go to sportsmans wearhouse tomorrow morning, 10 am, I'll be there to get a new gun, and I'll show you the CP3, and the location of your leak, mine is starting to go too.

01350banshee,

Check the threads lately by member Davelinde. He is about to have his 2nd CP3 injection pump installed.

This seems to be becoming a common problem primarily due to being starved for fuel by the stock lift pump. This is aggravated by cold weather and having the engine mounted lift pump, like you have. (03 thru 04.5 trucks)

05 model year trucks have an intank lift pump, which seems to be working better. It is away from the vibration of the engine and it pushes the fuel better, rather than "pulling" it and then feeding it to the CP3.

Some guys have had the lift pump moved to the intank location. Others have replaced their lift pump altogether with an aftermarket one. (Wallbro, FASS, RASP, etc.)

I am having a fuel pressure gauge installed pretty soon and I am also making some final decisions on which aftermarket pump to install on mine.

Hopefully, before I have a "leaking" CP3 too.

Thanks fella's,
When talking diesel I'm still learning. Now talk gas, whole different thing.
Thanks for the reply.

Don't let your dealer pull any C-R-A-P-O-L-A with you either. You MAY have to show him the pump, then he will have to call STAR, then you wait for the part. In my case - almost 1 month.

When I am up north (cold) I can smell diesel when I park the truck. Fuel pressure is between 5 and 6.5. In Florida I don't smell any fuel when I park, and fuel pressure is always 7.0 to 7.5. This is just a way my truck is telling me to stay where it is warm. I have no leaks on the ground. All stock fuel system.
I don't buy the starving CP3 crap. If that was the case a plugged fuel filter would do the same thing, regardless of what type of aftermarket pump you had on it. I don't run any additives, unless I travel from south to freezing areas, then I put in antigel.

I think to that the leaks are a result of winter blend fuel,I'm not saying that starving the cp3 will not cause leaks but I think it has more to do with the fuel.

That does make sense, when the Air Force went from JP4 to JP8 we had fuel leaks everywhere. Eventually the manufactures came out with a new packing that stood up the new fuel. If the winter fuel is thinner and has an anti jelling additive that shrinks the packing it would allow fuel to seep past. Just thinking out load.

Fuel and additives. I did just start using mmo/ps about 2 months ago, I cant say that's the cause since so many folks here use the stuff with no ill effects. If you're saying that winter blend is possibly the cause, how long after initial use are you saying that the problems will begin to rear it's head? I too have experience with changing fluids then seeing leaks, we went from this mobil synthetic stuff to royal purple in our UUV's. A change in the seating O-ring's solved the problem.

hey banshee,

Try filling your tank and dumping in one quart of automatic transmission fluid. Try this for a couple tanks and see if the leak stops..........................

If it doesn't stop the leak...........no harm done........would be worth trying in my opinion...............

I run 1-2 quarts per month through my truck..............no leaks yet>>>>

Keeping my fingers crossed................Good Luck...........
