fuel pump? please help

Hey Ya'll,
my fellow Marine needs some help with his 04. after a scolding about not changing the fuel filter out the last 70k miles, he started having problems the very next day (ironic huh?). he broke down on the side of the highway yesterday. the truck, he said, began puttering then stalling after about 20 miles on the road. he pulled over, we changed the filter (the first time in at least 70k miles) and it ran smooth about another 10 or so miles. it keeps stalling on him. this morning he made it about two miles from his house before it started crapping out so he limped it back home. we drained the water sep. and saved it to check for water.... nothing. we also ran A LOT of Lucas fuel cleaner through it. then gimped another 50 or so miles with it cutting in and out. checked the filter again and it will still clean. sometimes the truck will start right up and idle forever but the minute you put it in drive or try to goose it it stalls. SO, I'm thinking he has junk in the injectors? because doesn't a fuel pump just go out, not just act up? he is also switching between blue/white and black smoke. I'm thinking too lean/too rich respectively? any educated thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Did you bleed the filter after installation? Bump the starter once, leaving the key on, but engine off - lift pump will run 25seconds, allowing you to open the drain and bleed the air. If the lift pump does not run, it will need a new lift pump - if the oem lift pump is still on the filter, easiest is autozone\equiv for a replacement

You might also check the connector - remove it and replace it, bump the starter, see if the pump runs

get a fuel pressure gauge and check the pressure. You can buy a cheap $5 one and just disconnect the fuel line into the injection pump, hook that line up to the gauge turn the key on and see what the pump is putting out.

I am going to guess that the pump is on it's way out.

PUmp

That is exactly what my truck started to do when the fuel pump went right before Christmas. It started stalling out at random then hard starting. After about 6 start-stall cycles in one night the truck would not start. For fear of damaging something I just called the tow truck to come and get it. If it is your pump you should be able to pop the good and listen for the pump when you turn the key. No noise = bad pump. If it is the pump remember that it is on the block under the fuel filter and will be covered under the 100K warranty. They will replace it with an In-tank pump.
Thanks,
John

Any codes?

To check, turn ignition on (don't start it), off, on, off, on.

If there are codes they'll show upu in the odometer led readout.

Mine showed a P0628 when the lift pump went out. I replaced it with a FASS.

You're describing a lift pump failure. Has nothing to do with the filter and nothing to do with "rich" and "lean". Forget rich and lean when talking about a diesel. It could be a clogged pickup in the tank but you can check for the 0628 code and verify the lift pump failure.

To check for the code turn the key on and off three times and look at the odometer. It will display a code number that can be looked up. 0628 is a lift pump failure.
