Fuel Injection Line question

Hi, I've seen some discussion here regarding the 3rd. generation CRD's having problems with the fuel injection line failing. It seems to be centering around the isolator failing due to age / vibration or some other reason and allowing the steel high pressure line to vibrate and eventually fail. Please tell me if I am off base on this but this is what I have absorbed from this discussion.

I'm visiting in Kansas at the moment and I stopped yesterday at a Cummins shop and inquired about this. They were not aware of any specific issue but could order the isolator and lines if needed. The isolator was about $4 each ( 2 per line ) and the #4 line was about $25. I gather that in my model, '06, that the #4 is the most likely culprit. My truck has 50k on it and all seems tight and in order. I'm looking to simply be prepared since I travel and tow and don't want to be stranded on the road.

My question seems to be, should I simply get a few of the isolators to have on hand or do I also need to have the line ????? Do I need a complete set of lines ?????? Just trying to be a good boy scout and be prepared.

Pick up a #4 line and isolator. Mine popped around 40K miles and it does suck cause you are stranded when it lets go. Keep the line and tools to change it under your seat and you'll be good to go.

Thanks Nick, appreciate the benefit of your misfortune. But is the #4 line any more likely to be the point of failure than any other line. Or was it just the luck of the draw and your's came up #4 ????

Happened last week to my daughter. She was driving a 1999 and had #5 go out in central Ohio. She was towing a trailer full of rowing shells to the races in Cincinatti.

On the common rail trucks, it seems #4 is the one that goes all the time. The one they replaced on my truck was an "upgraded" part. I have read several posts on it, plus when mine went they were hard to find in stock at a Dodge dealer. I checked with the local Cummins dealer and they had a few on the shelf. The local Cummins dealer doesn't stock a lot of parts for our trucks at their location. They usually have to get parts from a central warehouse, but they did have those. Put all these things together and I believe #4 is the one to watch. BTW, I now have 137K miles on my truck and have not had another problem.......with the engine.

Hope you won't have any more problems. I got mine used with 28k on it. It just turned 50k last week on my way out to Kansas. I checked the lines the other day and things looked good and tight. I think I'll take your advice and pick up #4 and some isolators. Of course then I'm assured to have #5 go. But I'll be ready for #4.

I put a 8mm wrench on each isolator at each oil change and make sure they are tight.

Just about to turn 340k on my originals.

Ive read so much about this problem here that you boys scared me.


I stopped by the wrecking yard and bought every fuel line from the pump onward, lol Just for spares. Got em for 75 bucks..

Dont know If I'll ever use em, but I sure feel better.. lol

What a coincidence! Today I had my #5 injector line fail. I just fueled up, drove about 90 km's and when I got to where I was going I stopped in a huge cloud of diesel smoke/steam! I lost over 3/4 of a tank of fuel. Everything and I mean everything under the hood was coated in diesel all the way to the very back tailgate. Very discouraging on Fathers day morning. Luckily there was a small town of about 100 people and low and behold someone had a common rail engine with a hole in the side of the block that I could rob the injector line and insulator from! Yeeee haw! Truck is 6 years old and that is the 2nd time I have ever had any motor issue. About 4 years ago I had the factory lift pump go on me and I now have a in tank one. 415,000 kms..... And stupid me should have known better. I heard a different injector noise for about a month..... Kinda knew something about loose injector line clamps but never did check! Guess who is going to check the rest of his injector clamps????? Might even buy a #4 injection line just from this post...... $45 bucks way up north here for an injection line........

My daughter called me today. She's the one that had the #5 line fail last week on a 1999 work truck. They had it repaired by a road service in Ohio. When they got it back to Connecticut they had it looked over by their local mechanic and he gave the job a thumbs up. Someone else drove it over the weekend to a race in Princeton, NJ and had the same line ( new line ) fail on the way back to Ct. Not sure just what issues they may be having with this truck. I'm in Kansas and can't take a look see.

Certainly something to keep a look after as these miles start adding up.

upon ordering the new replacement line, i found out it was the famous # 4 injection line. I thought I could count to 5!
