Fuel Filter/Seperator
I getting ready to do my second oil change and went to dealer to get filters. I had planed to change fuel filter every other oil change. BUT dealer charged me $37.35
for the fuel filter. Does this sound reasonable? How often do most of you change the fuel filter? I"m using the 7,500 mi schedule, so does it need to be change every 15,000 miles? This is my first diesel so any help would be appriciated!

Keep the receipt and return it.
Go to your local Cummins parts distributor and buy the exact same filter for about $14.00, and oil filters for about $8.00.
To find your closest parts house, go here:

$37 for a fuel filter is outrageous, I would recommend you order filter kits from Geno's or elsewhere, considerably cheaper (I think the fuel filter runs about $12 there).

I pay $12 for mine at the local Cummins Fleetguard dealer. Most any big rig shop will have Fleetguard. Part # FS19579. My old dealer tried charging me $20 something for one, so I told him forget it, I'll just use Fleetguard. Then, he must have thought I was a moron cause he tried the "Those aren't approved and will void your warranty" bit, till I asked him to get a Mopar FF out and look on the bottom, for the "Stratopore". Of course, they were out of stock at the moment...

Wow, they must have seen me coming. I guess I should have done some checking before I went. Thanks for the advice. It's going back tomorrow!
I did'nt find anything on the link, but I think they have a dealer in Little Rock. How often do yaw change it?

Check with www.genosgarage.com, they sell 4-2-1 kits, 4 fuel filter, 2 oil filters and 1 air filter.
Also, look up DTR member T-7 Firefighter, he's in the Little Rock area, he might be able to guide you to a local supplier.
I'm changing mine every 10k miles. Some will say that's not often enough, some will say that's too often. I always carry 2 with me in the truck also as spares.
You might watch eBay also, I just saw 6 LF19579's sell for around $60.
Good Luck.

I don't feel there is any ideal interval for changing the fuel filter, it all depends on where you get your fuel. I know a guy who went 82k on the filter that came with his truck new before it plugged. On the other hand a bad load of fuel might only get you 10 miles. Only way to know for sure is with a fuel pressure gauge, pays for itself fast by eliminating unnecessary filter changes.
I always change at 25k unless the gauge tells me otherwise.
Napa Gold and Wix fuel filters are exactly the same filter as Fleetguard.

I see they don't seem to list a Cummins service facility in your area.
You might try a local Yahoo "Yellow Pages" search for truck parts.
Or contact DTR member Shortround.
I believe he's out there near your neck-of-the-woods.

Has anyone used the Wix replacement?Wix Filter
Well I returned the filter today. They were'nt happy about it. I got $40.52 back tax and all. The guy said "I normally don't do this, but I'll give you your money back".
I just smiled and said some "friends" told me I could get them for about a third of that. He said we don't set the price, Chrysler does. O well, I could'nt deal with them when I bought the truck anyway, their just closer. Thanks guys!
