fuel consumption

I am a first time dodge diesel owner, 2 weeks.
I have 1800 miles on the 1 ton, and after 4 tanks of fuel, the miledge is all over the place, 1st. tank 18.5, 2nd tank 17, third tank 15.5, is this normal or do i need to see the service dept? thanks for any help

First off, welcome to the group.

2nd, more info is needed.

What year? dual or single rear wheel? 4x4?

Hand calculated mileage, or relying on the overhead display.

If this is a 3rd gen truck, I'll move it to that forum for more exposure once we get the details.

You might know this already, but I'll throw it out for what its worth. Since foaming fuel and our filler pipes don't mix well, it takes a loooong time to "fillup" to the same volume as you started with. If you rely on when the automatic shut off kicks it off, its probably not accurate because the foam shuts the nozzel off. If you bought fuel from different places, it may explain the wide variation.

That actually sounds about right for mixed city/hwy driving, or hwy at 75mph.

I don't think he's complaining, he's just wondering why the mileage is fluctuating so much. My gasser gets 12.X no matter what. 3MPG variance on that truck would get me wondering what was wrong, too.

okflyer, you will find that your speed will affect the mileage of your new diesel much more than it did on anything you drove previously. You probably drove it a bit slower when it was new and now you're speeding it up a bit. Down goes the mileage. Keep it at or below 70mph and your mpg will be higher. These things are built for pulling very heavy loads at relatively slow speeds. If you learn to accept the cars and SUVs whizzing by at 75 plus while you cruise at 60 to 68, you will learn to love getting ~20mpg and 600+ miles per tank. I am.

Enjoy! You have nothing to worry about.
