Fluid Capacity Question (And a Few Other Questions as Well)
The manual for my '03 says that the NV5600 tranny needs 4.5L (9.5 pints) of fluid. It also says my differential needs 3.62L (9.65 pints).
To Americanize that so I can buy it off the shelf, that's almost 5 quarts of tranny fluid and almost 4 quarts of differential fluid.
Can someone who has changed these fluids lately verify that the quantites shown in the manual are sufficient? I plan to buy them ahead of time and I don't want to have to make two trips to the local Auto Zone.
Also, while I've changed the differential fluid plenty of times, I've never messed with the tranny. I have a few questions.
1) Anything special that needs to be done besides pulling the drain plug, letting it drain and then filling it back up?
2) The bottom bolt of the PTO cover is the drain bolt, correct?
3) Do I need to put thread sealer on the drain bolt before putting it back in the PTO cover?
4) The fill plug (and the drain bolt for that matter) appear to be on the driver's side of the transmission. When I fill it back up do I just fill it until the new oil starts running out of the fill hole or is there some other way to know when it has enough?

1) No
2) Yes
3) No
4) Yes - The NV5600 will hold roughly 4.75 qts of fluid. You will know when its full because since the fill hole is mounted vertically, it will over flow out of the transmsission.

Personally, I thought as long as I was changing the fluid, I may as well pull the PTO cover off to clean the magnet. Also, a lot of fluid will still be pooled in the bottom of the transmission, and if you pull the cover you can pump a bunch out...
I used RTV and tread sealant when I reinstalled the cover, but the thread sealant is probably optional...
P.S. There have been a couple of threads lately about improving shifting by overfiling the NV via the top bolt of the PTO cover, and I was thinking about trying that myself.

The magnet will just be sitting in the bottom of the case. I was able to just reach in with my fingers and find it.
Mine had quite a bit of metal mud on it (photo in my gallery) so I think it was worth while to clean it.
I would imagine if you went overboard on overfilling, oil would leak out the input shaft into the clutch housing. I was thinking I'd only add about 1/2 a quart above the fill hole...
I've been running Redline. It was a bit bumpy sometimes going into 3rd, which is gone now, but now it can be difficult to get it into any gear after it's been idling in N... so I've been kicking around going with Syncromesh.

My truck has never had any problems shifting so I think I'll just stick with filling it per the manual. I'm replacing the factory oil with Synchromesh because it's much easier to get than Redline. Autozone has 1 qt containers for $6.89, which is $2 cheaper than the Mobil 1 75W-90 that goes in the rear end.
