FASS and fuel Filter

I thought they had installed one of the FASS's with a filter and separator, but when I looked it appears just to be the HPFP pump. A couple of basic questions. This is supposed to have a filter installed upstream of it and none was installed - what is a good filter to install. Is it worth upgrading to a FASS with a filter and separator?

Does the FASS unit have have do air removal?

Thanks

Peter

Here's an excellent Racor pre-filter head with water separator, has optional WIF sensor, and heater - this one has optional primer pump and air bleed, but is available without - check'em out at Racor.com

The strainer we use ahead of our HPFP pump is a 144 wire mesh, NAPA#: 3270

Be careful using after market filter heads, as our pump do not like to suck through tight filter elements. This will cause pressure drops under load and noisy pump operation. We don’t like to see anything tighter than 140um on the suction side of the pump. Put the tight filtration on the pressure side of the pump.

FASS stands for Fuel Air Separation System

HPFP stands for High Performance Fuel Pump

The FASS is the only one with the air removal.

Great to know you are here - what exactly would you recommend I install, I'd like a filter and a water separator - can I sell my HPFP and just buy a better FASS or can I get a screen for infront of the FASS and a decent water separator and filter for after the FASS.

Look on vulcanperformance.com. Best prices on aux FF set-ups I've seen. Unfortunately for me I saw it after I ordered my Glacier set-up.

This will be pre-filter between the tank and the lift pump on the inlet side - function is to protect the lift pump by removing water and trapping the large stuff that can damage the pump - 20micron is recommended - 2micron will prevent the pump from doing it's job, as Dan indicated - 2 micron is suitable for the primary filter for the Inj Pump, on the pressurized output side of the lift pump

The pre-lift pump strainer that FASS recommends has no water separator in it. Is there a separate, low pressure loss, water separator that I can put in front of the FASS, everything I've seen looks like the separator is integral with a filter.

To each his own. I’m not on here to sell......but if you have the HPFP already, that will work just fine for you as a solid pump.

BUT you will get obvious benefits with the full FASS in the way of filtering and reduced operating costs.

BUT I don’t think it would be fair of me to push the FASS on you when you have a perfectly good HPFP already unless you really wanted to sell the HPFP and get the FASS.

Both pumps will treat you well.

I would recommend that Racor type, with or without the primer pump - you can instantly see any evidence of water or any other contamination, and the filter elements are available in all the popular flavors.

The Fass and Airdog neither have that type filtration - while I was not invited to the R&D sessions for either company, I would suspect the reason being the high cost of real estate in those systems - the Racor head is large, but there's plenty of room back near the fuel tank.

Which of the Racor systems? I went to their web site and the is no explanation of the systems and when you might use one or another. I've searched online to find a vendor and there are only a couple that aren't strictly marine and I still can't tell the kits from the elements. I'm guessing I need the 120 gph 10 micron?

The Racor would go after my FASS pump, and I'll put a screen in front of the FASS, but don't I need a water separator in front of the FASS as well to keep it running?

This Racor is for vacuum or pressure so it can go either B4 or after the pump, but you want to install it between the tank and the pump to get the bad stuff B4 it gets to the pump - the models with the pump are

445R - 45gph
460R - 60gph
490R - 90gph

The 445R is suitable for the Dodge, and you do not want the 2micron element for pre-filter ahead of the pump - 10 will work, and 30 will work, since it is a pre-filter\water separator.

You could install a 30micron B4 the pump and another with 2micron after the pump - very similar to the FASS or Airdog systems.
