Fan clutch install
Fan clutch...How?
Could anybody give me a good how-to on removal and install of the engine fan clutch on a 2006 Ram with the 5.9 Cummins? I have the shroud unbolted and the fan clutch unplugged, but how do I go about removing it?
Need a fan clutch wrench (36mm) and a 2lb sledge. Once you get the wrench where you need it, give it a good smack toward the passenger side. Clutch should be loose enough to spin by hand. Manual says you can collapse the shroud enough to pull it out, but it's easier to remove the fan, clutch, and shroud all together. Be easier with a 2nd pair of hands.
Pull the top radiator support. 2 bolts on each side and remove the long radiator mounts. (10mm) Remove the hood latch. Unbolt the inner shroud but don't remove it, it will have 2 bolts on each side at the top. Unbolt the fan shroud. (4-13mm bolts.) Disconnect the fan wiring harness and support bracket. (10mm). Use a 36mm wrench and do lefty-loosey. You may have to use a pry bar to keep the pulley from moving. Wedge it between the 10mm bolts that hold the pulley on. Once it is loose, you can just turn the fan left and it will come right off. You should have enough room to wiggle the fan and clutch straight out the top.
I had a heck of a time getting mine off and ended up having to use an air chisel to break it loose. Not the ideal way but if it comes down to it it's an option. I removed the shroud to make it a little easier.
Finished it in the driveway last night with my father's help. Needed quite the pry bar to hold the pulley in place in order to back off the nut. Extra hands made it much easier. Thanks for all the help guys!
