Erratic rail pressure, truck surging

After being parked for 5 months and not being started at all she fired right up today on first crank. took her out for a drive and after about 10 minutes of driving on the interstate I noticed the rail pressure gauge was bouncing and the truck surging. I pulled off the interstate and coast to a stop on neutral. While coasting to a stop I noticed at times the rail pressure drops to the lowest setting and the RPM dropped as well and feels like the truck was about to stall. I turned it off and restarted and this time the engine check light came on. I drove back home and the same thing rail pressure erratic and truck surging.

I plugged the Smaty to check the code and it says "P0193 fuel pressure sensor voltage too high". Anyone knows what might be the cause of the erratic rail pressure? Could it be a bad FCA?

Bad fuel as in water or condensation somehow got into the tank? I have good filtration with dual CAT 2 micron filter so I doubt if contaminants got through. I will drain the WFS filter tomorrow to see if any water is present. What would be the sign of a bad FCA?

It could be a bad FCA. You're going to have to start at the beginning of the fuel system. Do you have a lift pump pressure gauge? If so what was it readying?

Bad fuel could mean that it was dirty or you have algae growing in the tank. That would plug up your filter.

I would start off by changing out your filters to see if they're plugged.

If that all checks out, I would try your rail pressure releaf valve. Remove the banjo bolt & start up the engine, if you're seeing fuel there, it is bad & will need to be replaced. Check the oil to see if the oil level is going up. That would one sign of injectors going bad. If not than, I would change out the FCA to see if its bad.

If those don't do anything to fix the issue, then I would have the injectors pulled & gone through. It's probably the injectors bleeding back into the return line.

Good luck.

Checked for water on the FWS canister but nothing but fuel came out. Fuel pressure is good and never dropped below 7 PSI so I know my dual CAT 2 micron fuel filters are not clogged.

Returned the Smarty setting to stock and took it for a drive. Well it runs almost good with slight bounce on the rail pressure gauge. However I know there is something wrong because when I'm cruising on the interstate at about 60 MPH rail pressure normally goes up as I press the skinny pedal to go a little faster but instead the rail pressure goes down 5-7K and then recovers once I back off the skinny pedal. It is not surging anymore as the rail pressure is not bouncing as much as before the Smarty was removed.

Unlike before the Smarty was returned to stock it idles fine now. I have no rail pressure added on the Smarty setting. Maybe it is the FCA, rail pressure relief valve or sensor. Any idea?

Could be some algea has grown in the injection pump. Might add some algea-cyd.

That will cause stuff to act like its gummed up. Burn up that fuel and put some fresh in it with some good additive. Bet youll be fine.

Diesels hate sitting. next time dose it good with algea preventer and additive.
