Belt can't be put on to tight. Its got a spring loaded tensioner. Some early 03s had a differant stamped alternator bracket that was prone to cracking.Theres a Tsb on that and a cast iron bracket replacement.

The alternator bracket TSB does not apply to 04.5s and 05s, Houndog. I think this is a different issue entirely. Just WHAT issue, I don't know.

it was the belt tensioner pulley that killed the belt on mine at about 6k.

It at least looks like some dealers are at least trying to diagnose the problem. Mine (and a few others) simply replaced the belt.

So now I keep my eye on it, and don't really trust it. Which should NOT be the case on a relatively new vehicle. I shouldn't have to pop the hood once a week like it's a 30 year old Pinto.

My neighbors did it in 4k.He put 4k on his truck in about 2 weeks hauling.Anyhow first thing the tech said when he looked at it was pully/tensioner was bad.Another bigger dealer in another town nearby said thhey had replaced a fair amount of tensioners and belts.Usually kept them on hand but was out.

I think Hounddog is right. Sounds like your issue is more than a defective belt. Make your dealer do it right. However, if it happens a third time, you could simply lemon it, and get a new truck.

Thanks Krawler, please keep us informed of the next, and hopefully final, fix from your dealer.

Like I said in an earlier post, it appears that the belt which comes on the engines from Cummins is only ribbed, not cross-hatched. Don't know who there supplier is.

The replacement MOPAR belt which the dealer used is cross-hatched, and only rarely chirps. It does seem logical that the cross-hatched belt is designed to track better, so we'll see.

I check my belt weekly now.
