Engine swap

Is it possible to put a 1st. gen engine into an 06 2500 Big horn edition?

you can put a chev 350 in if you want

I know there are regulations regarding the use of older/earlier vintage engines in smog regulated vehicles, but that's for gassers, not sure about diesels. If you're in a region with smog testing you may want to check with the regulators if you plan to drive it on the street.
