Engine rebuild

Hello. I am new to this forum but hoping you can give me some guidance. Just got news from my mechanic that the motor on my '06 5.9L needs to be rebuilt. Leaky injector on the 6th cylander caused damage to piston and cylander. Quoting $8,000 to machine/rebuild. The truck (working) is worth about $8-10k and I don't have the funds to fix it now. Is there any salvage value to the truck with the motor damage? If so, where would I list it for sale?

Thanks in advance.

if you able to do it this way, take out a loan, get the engine rebuilt and then sell the truck and pay off your loan, unless you will come out with more money in the end by selling it as is

Depends on what it is 2WD/4WD, crew cab, single cab, miles, condition, etc.

I can tell you this, if it is at least a 4X4, around here that thing is worth WAY more than 8-10K.

As a roller, I wouldn't hesitate to ask 6-8000, here again, depending on what it is, 2WD's require the right guy to own.....

There is also a boneyard engine option.

Thank you for the reply. I am looking into this option. I spoke to my mechanic today and am trying to decide if I am able to fix it, whether a rebuild on the current motor or a used/remanufactured engine would be better. I know there are a lot of posts about this available, however many of them are outdated and the links are dead so I am going to ask again. Any recommendations on the best places to look for a used/reman engine?

patdaly - It is not 4x4. It is 2WD, 204,000 miles, crew cab in otherwise good condition. Just put a new tranny in it at 165,000 miles so that is fairly new as well. Any ideas what I could ask for it as is?

Maybe I'm crazy, but I would look around for someone willing to install one sleeve and leave the rest if its OK. Was the oil contaminated with fuel? If so it will need more then that hence the 6-8k price tag. Just thinking out loud.

Depends on where you live. Around here, you would be lucky to get 4K, but that is because of our climate ( Illinois). Get to a more temperate climate I could see 6-7K. That truck, running should bring 11-12K in a more temperate climate.

I would also inquire about just sleeving the hole and replacing the piston with a refresh on rings and bearings.
