Question Engine Oil Pressure

Is there someething going on with my oil presssure, or is it just the way the pressure is being read? From the day i got it new untill about 25-28000 miles, th oil pressure gauge would never get below what would be half way between 40 (middle black mark) and the first black mark to the left at idle in drive. Now when it comes up to temp, the oil pressure gauge will be just very little off the frist black mark when idle in drive. When it is frist cranked up ( cold), the pressure looks normal like it always has. I keep it changed and use the oil filter from Geno's.
I use Shell 15-40.
The engine runs and sounds great.
Just wondering whats up with the oil pressure readings. Thanks for replys

Oh, when running at hiwaay speed the oil pressure looks normal.

I hear ya! I don’t believe we are getting the true oil pressure with these OEM gauges.

What guages tell you are trends. Focusing on a particular reading on any giving day is pointless. Look for abnormal readings during a particular day. Temperature, barometric presure, humidity, can all effect readings.

The dash guages are just indicators of what the eng is doing. If it departs from the usual position while running or suddenly goes up or down, you know you have a problem. Remember the dash guage is not a test guage. Hook up a known good mechanical guage and run it to get the actual reading. Those electrical guages can vary a lot from temp to humidity to charging voltage changes or the reference voltage changes, and sometimes hitting a bump will alter those guages.

None of the big 3 OEM's have an oil pressure gauge on their diesel trucks. Its a switch. There is a map in the ECM that tells the gauge what to display for the given operating conditions. The switch is when the oil pressure drops below 10psi. The switch engages and the gauge goes to zero.

Amusing that they even have a "display". Might as well be a "dummy light".

Coolant temp/battery voltage are actual sensor readings.

Your gauges are computer controlled to " provide readings that are consistent with customer expectations". If you want to see what the real oil pressure is there is a 1/8" plug on top of the oil filter where you can insert a mechanical gauge. The oil pressure is about 70 psi from what I have seen others reading. As far as I feel it is a dmmy light.

Ford doesn't even do that good. They use a 3 psi switch that closes and the "gauge" always reads center scale. SAve a penny on each truck??

I'd be glad to pay extra for a real gauge. Have to add it yourself.
