There's no risk associated with changing from one brand of petroleum oil to another. In the end, it's personal preference, as Delo 400, Rotella, and Delvac 1300 are all GREAT OILS, more than up to the task of keeping your CTD alive.

I've developed a preference for DELO 400, because of Chevron's iso-dewaxing technology.

Oh, and on the whole idea that sticking with one brand is better:

I doubt it. I can't recall a situation where I've used the EXACT same oil (brand, viscosity, etc) twice in a row on ANY vehicle in the 15 years I've been maintaining my own vehicles.

My Dodge has had Rotella (both in 15w-40 and 10w-30 grades), Delvac, DELO, Redline, Valvoline, and M1 T&SUV, all in the less than 50K miles it has on it.

NEVER any oil seal leakage. The only oil leak I've EVER had was my fault-- I didn't tighten the turbo drain bolts when I R&R'd the turbo, and the oil was leaking here (all my fault)-- and it stopped when I snugged the bolts.

Because each oil is formulated differently, I could make a logical argument that rotating through a couple different brands of quality oil is better for the engine than getting the same oil all the time.

Sticking with one brand is a myth. You will not find the same oil when you change you oil again >> even if you try... Companies do their best to keep a standard but the fact is... every batch is a little different than the last.
If you want to use that same oil through out the life of your truck.... Get a 330 gal tote and be sure to blend it up every time you use any.

Ok, just for grins......

Not that I plan to do this mind you....

But using Hohn's argument for a sec.....

Could you use a gallon of Rottella, a gallon of Delo, and a gallon of Delvac all in the same oil change if they are all 15w40? Would you then get some of the "benefits" of each brands specific "formula"? Or if this is a bad idea, then why?

I wouldn't see the harm in it, nor would I see the point.

Try it sometime. That way you can get the SMELL of RoSmella, the isodewaxing of the DELO and the robust additives of the Delvac

Keep in mind that when you change oil, it's physically impossible to get ALL of the old stuff out. So the idea that certain oils are not compatible with one another seems a little ludicrous to me.

At my last oil change in my '03, running Chevron Delo-400, I ran the oil for 8303 miles. Some of those miles were towing. I also live in the desert (dusty, hot environment).

I had a used oil analysis done since this was the longest i'd ever gone on any oil. The analysis came back good. The oil still had a lot of miles left in it.

The quality & durability of heavy-duty, diesel-rated engine oils seems to be good.

I didn't mean different oils aren't compatible with each other. SORRY if it came off that way. I said find a good oil & stick with it. There's enough maintenance & other things to deal with. I don't think one should try to reformulate oil. I just know guys that buy any oil thats cheap let some kid at the five minute pit stop change their oil. These are also the guys with dirty leaky motors. So to say find a good oil & stick with it is just one less thing to worry about. Some one asked a question & I offered my opinion. I didn't mean to insult the almighty. I find this forum helpful with a lot of useful info. Posting to just slam some one else's opinion helps no one. To say you have done your own maintenance for 15 years is a good thing. I should praise you but I've done mine for 30 no big thing. No not every batch of oil is exactly the same but close enough. Every bottle of Bud I drink tastes the same to me. There's enough web sites on here where every one bashes each other. I hope we can all try to help each other out. SORRY to carry on just felt attacked by a little too much ego. So I'll say use any oil/fluids/filters you feel confident with & do as much of your own maintenance that you can.You will have less troubles down the road.

God has a capital G, just noticed this, no offense, if not Christian is fine by me, but it is still capital, it's a name

In saying this I am not trying to be a smart mule, just re-affirming that no matter what is said, on any subject, someone will disect it and say something, all gramer was good with the exception of that, see.... Again no offense, I agree on the original subject and will be quiet now

Point taken, over sight on my part. Correction made. More than I should have said any way.
