What you may be hearing is the air being purged from the fuel line. The newer trucks do it automatically every time you turn the key on.

Well.... you might also have some loud injectors. Or, you can try running the motor and holding your hand on the valve cover to see if you can feel it coming from there.

I don't know what kind of room there is in there but, I had another ride with the same symptoms. It's ended up being a rocker arm hitting the valve cover. I back the bolt out on the cover closet to the to the arm and the noise stopped.

Whether I'm even close... I don't know. Just thought I'd help with some suggestions.

Good luck with it!

Curious....Do you notice this sound when the truck is sort of "lugging"? I have noticed a "ticking" sound on mine when it shifts into o/d and then I slow down some and it doesn't shift down...and then when I speed back up. Like maybe in the 1200-1400 rpm range. It will pull out of it or I can shift down and it will go away...or at least not be noticeable. I haven't been to concerned about it yet, but your thread made me wonder if I should be.

Kinda interested myself, my 06 does it also. Wanna take it to the *******, however im afraid they are going to want to keep it ( read dismantle and screw it up) and its my only ride now that the other truck is sold.

It must be a common noise. i got a 2007 ctd quad cab with 4100 miles and it ticks, sounds like in front of the valve cover.

Injectors!

It is just your injectors ticking away! In the 2004.5 and newer trucks there is an extra injection pulse and almost sounds like something is wrong, but it is completely normal. Lift your hoods when the motor is running and walk from one side of the motor to the other side and you will hear a tone difference on each side. exhaust sounds lower and intake sounds higher. Now when you are putting a load on the motor it will enhance these sounds. Remember diesel motors are noisy, even the new ones, so allot of the time people think something is wrong but it's all in your heads. Also every truck is going to sound different because the ECM learns how you drive and adjusts accordingly. Don't worry so much and just enjoy you trucks.

mine sounds like either a loose rocker arm, or piston slap on the #6. The harder you pull with it the worse it gets. I also have a growl/groan that sounds like an out of balance drive shaft that gets really annoying when loaded down and it goes into overdrive going uphill! Gets a nice dash rattling oscillation going. You can hear the 3rd injection tick in the other injectors, however if you stand back by the door on either side, there is a distinct rattle. Almost sounds like when the throwout bearing goes out on a clutch. Not consistant sound all the time, but always rattling like hell one way or another.
