I wash the engine & compartment every 2 or 3 months. Park it the night before where I want to wash, so it's overnight cold before I start. Cover electrical boxes and air filter with plastic grocery bags, wet the engine with a light spray, mist it with Simple Green, and wash with a brush while misting with more water. Done this with all my cars for years, and never have to degrease because they never get really dirty if I keep up with it. Never had any problems this way

Be sure to remove plastic grocery bags when done!

Castrol Engine degreaser in the purple bottle works great. used it on a truck that was covered in crude oil from years in the oilfield and it took the stuff right off. Word to the wise however, WEAR GLOVES when using this stuff cause it ate my hands up. Took over a mmonth for all the skin to finally quit peeling and heal . I got that gallon jug at walmart but that has been a year ago and still on the same bottle. It works

it's an iron block, don't worry about it. If it was aluminum then you'd have to worry about it.
