Question Engine cleaning

What are you guys using to keep the engine compartment clean on your trucks? I don't want to use anything that is going to remove whatever coating there is on the block or head.

A friend turned me onto P21S Total Auto Wash. He used it on his 911 twin turbo so I though it would be good enough for the Dodge. It's a fantastic citrus based product and is safe for use on paint. In fact, it can be used for tar and bugs as well.

I use Simple Green also for engine wash. Be careful with some of the cleaners that are caustic, they will cause aluminum to corrode.

I used a leather and plastic sealer on mine when new, now I just hose it down and reapply it every 6 months. Everything looks new.

ok, kinda a dumb question but what (if anything) do you guys cover when spraying off the engine?

i realize its not as bad as a gasser where u gotta cover the distributor and such. just dont wanna make a complicated process outta something as simple as cleaning the engine.

thanks

I have rinsed all my engines for years with just the hose. No soap or anything. Just a good flush to get the leaves, bugs and dust out. I try and stay away from electrical connections though.

I never have attempted to cover the engine. It's a well sealed machine. And other than the alternator and all electrical connections, I just give it all a good blast with the hose.

2 cents

Id suggest covering both the fuse/relay box and alternator with plastic. A pressure washer is ok if used with some common sense...(whatever that is.... )

If you spray it off at night, leave it running and those bad spark plug wires wil give you a nice light show.

Also make sure you spray the spark plug holes and distributor.

Thanks for the info, guys. My engine isn't greasy at all, just dust. I didn't know what, if anything, people were using to make their engine compartments shine. Mine is kinda nasty right now and was wonder if you guys used anything to get it back in shape. I'll need to cover the end of my Scotty III to keep the water out of it. Thank goodness for Walmart plastic bags.

Shine? Ahh... There's a liquid polymer that can be sprayed in the engine compartment after cleaning to give things a glossy look. Problem is I can't remember the name of the stuff. Problem is that it doesn't last forever and starts to crack peel and lift up similar to onion skin. Looks horrible in this phase.
