which engine in 04'?????

is there a different # or letter in the vin # on an 04' truck to tell which engine it has???? I'm looking at an 04' 3500 crew cab dually & was wondering if it was the 600 or 610 motor, I was thinking that they switched in 04.5???? thanks in advance, Dusty

Dusty,
The engines have a white label on the top drivers side that says how much HP they have.
If it is a 325hp then it is a 2004.5 600.

If it is a 305hp then it is a 2004 555 tq engine.

thanks, i'm looking at the truck over the net, it's about 6 hr's away & they don't have any pictures of the engine at all, so i was hoping the vin might help, but I don't think after doing some more reading that it's gonna give me the info I need???? guess I'll have to call back & see if they can check for me, thanks a bunch, Dusty

Both the 555 and 600, as well as the 05 610's have a "C" in the 8th spot. The SO has a 6.

The build date on the door jamb will help, too.

the truck is in Columbia Tn, just a bit south of Nashville, it's an 04' crew cab 6sp. Laramie, & they claim it has a 2 spd. rear, i'm thinking gear vendors or u.s. gear????? here's a link .... http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...en&cardist=310

My 2004.5 3500 QC 4x4 Laramie 6 sp loaded was only $33,000 new. Check with Woodhouse Dodge in Blair NE. They will deliver you a new one cheaper than you can buy used. Just my opinion.
