Engaging & disengaging 4WD
I got my 04 CTD 4WD bac in the spring and haven't even used 4WD. I will need it for sure tomorrow as I'm hauling some cattle out of a farm that is going to be very muddy and wet. Is there a certain procedure for putting it into 4WD low and then taking it back out when I get on the road?
Thanks

i put the trans in neutral and i turn off the truck. i have had a few times of it grinding with the motor running. so i kill it before going in or out of low. just to be sure no grinding.

At like 5 mph put it in neutral and drop it into 4low. Don't put it in 4 high pulling a heavy load because it puts a ton of strain on the transmission(that's what it says in the owners manual). And be careful backing up with a load in 4x4. I smoked my transmission fluid doing this, but I was in 4 high but I had to back up a hill with a load because it was either that or slide down into some trees and a creek.
Take it out of 4 low before getting onto pavement, I've a couple times had a hard time engaging and disengaging 4 low on pavement.

Guess mine's going to be toast. I have no use for a truck that can't work in 4WD. Not on good traction but when it's needed, absolutely.

It's easiest to shift into 4L or 4H if the truck is moving, say around 3 - 5 mph. You can shift it when it isn't moving, but you just might get a little grinding. Before you get back to the asphalt road, put it back in 2H. The asphalt will cause binding in the 4x4, which will make it hard to take it out of 4wd once you get up onto it.

IAW the owners manual, the truck has to be moving foreward AND the auto trans has to be in Neutral to shift out of 4L.
The truck does not have to be moving to get it in to 4L, but the trans has to be in Neutral.
