EGT variations in cylinders
EGT variations in cylinders
I have heard and read that the #6 cylinder runs the hottest on our CTD's. What I want to know is just how much difference in exhaust temperature is there from each cylinder? Are we talking a difference of a few degrees per, or as much as a hundred or more from the front to back? I'm in a debate over thermocouple placement with someone I know and I want to make sure I can back up my talk, lol...
I wouldn't think that the diff. would be as high as a hundred deg. I would think maybe like 20-40 deg. on the high end. But i'm not an expert, i'm sure others will chime in later.

Yeah me either but I am not as smart as I would like to be regarding these engines. I should add that mine is an 03 common rail, if that makes any difference. For mods look at my signature.

The only way to know would be to put a thermocouple on each cylinder and measure them under various conditions. Many diesel ship engines are arranged this way so you can monitor how each cylinder is doing while underway. It's a good tool for setting up mechanical injectors, or with the common rail system, it would probably show individual injector differences.

my son inlaw runs his own shop .he say that if you get diffrent temps at the manifold that mite be injector problem.temp should run with in 75 deg of each other.also check with one for those infra-red heat gun,it should give you a second opion to go buy

The #6 chamber is always going to run the hottest because of the position in our trucks and the distance from the radiator. Idealy the probe should be as close as possible to the back 2 cylinders to make sure the hottest readings are seen.
In a stock to slightly modded application the placement is not as critical. When you start pushing the fuel and power up and really loading the engine is when the differences can get significant.
From all the testing I've read about, where all the cylinders come together is the hottest point, so I guess before the turbo at the collector, unless you want separate readings for specific cylinders, like in aircraft engines.
