EGT Readings
EGT Readings
I just installed autometer gauges and my egt is about 400 at idle 800-1000 crusing and If i punch it, i can get it up to 1400. This is all on stock power, I have a Triple Dog but I am on stock power settings. I have read that you shouldnt run at 1200 for an extended period of time, but with me running at 1000 just cruising, i think that if I add any sort of a load I am going to be 1200 easy, I also live in the rocky mountains so everything I pull is either up or down.
Are the EGT reading ok for what I am doing and what happens when I turn on performance and carzy larry. I am sure there is going to be a bit more then 1400. Please let me know
thanks

I drove my 05 for two and a half years without gauges and about a month ago I finallly put the gauges on and was SHOCKED. Running empty and getting on the pedal pretty hard I can hit 1450 going up a freeway ramp and this is completely stock! I have put 60,000 miles on it so far and a lot of those miles were dragging some pretty big loads. So far I have not noticed any signs of damage, so maybe they can run that hot? Bout a month ago I put a Smarty on and that brought the egt"s down quite a bit.
I just installed the Auto meters into my 07 5.9 SAME readings as you. yes, they are Normal. I believe cummins says our engines were designed for 1350 for 5 minutes constant? Read that some place. But yes, those numbers are normal for these trucks!
These Cummins seem to run pretty hot, your numbers are close to what I seem. Most think they run so hot because of the extra injection event. I still try to keep my temps below 1250, but I think these trucks are capable of handling temps up to 1400.
I wouldn't be overly concerned with short bursts, my understanding is that 1400 is not a problem. I would only worry if you kept it pegged for miles. Just think about how many trucks are out there with no gauges.

I did not have gauges before the Smarty Jr. (got them both at the same time), but with the Smarty Jr. on level 2 – towing, and a 10,000lb 5er, when I have to floor in getting on the highway from camping in the high desert @ 3,000ft elevation, I am usually only at 1,285 - 1,300 max (for a short time – until up to speed). My probe is pre turbo in the manifold. Normal driving with normal acceleration, I range from 400 – 850 +/- depending on acceleration and coasting. I heard the Jr. keep the EGTs lower. Might be a consideration to get.
By the way, Nathan, I live in Norwood and I'd like to see your truck some time.
the 04.5 up were designed to run hotter, get a smarty Jr and get the software for the 04.5 up for the smoke , this will lower your egt by about 200* . there is more things you can do to lower the egt even more but starts getting expensive one good thing about it the mpg goes up with each one
