EGR

How will the new EGR be implemented? Wondering if it will be piped in downstream of the intercooler (hopefully) and how can a prospective buyer be aware of whether an '04 model truck has it or not?

I am going to have to wait until next year to get my truck and so will either have to get a used '03 or an early '04 but without the EGR. That means having to determine if a truck has the EGR or not...I guess it will be super illegal to disable it if on a truck as OEM. On the cummins website, they claim it has been in service for a long time on other engines cummins makes and that it has been very reliable. I have my doubts though. I will not own one unless there is no other way to get a cummins. I would get a 2nd gen truck and go through it totally before buying a truck with EGR.

Since no one has one of the new trucks with EGR on it yet, I guess no one really knows for sure how it will be ported in. Certainly are not getting any answers from DC on this. I would imagine that EGR will hurt sales somewhat, but then again a lot of people really don't know that much about the details of these trucks anyway.

Re:EGR

On the version of EGR Cummins uses on the class 8 engines the EGR is piped in at the turbo. You should be able to look at the turbo and notice a significate amount of added tubing. Good LUCK finding the truck you want.

Re:EGR

Its not even clear that the 2004.5 trucks will even have EGR. It certainly looks like they will but we really don't know. We'll just have to wait until next week (or whatever "November" means) for DC to issue their press release.

If you ask me, they'll up the marketing specs to make it look more attractive, make a big marketing splash and say something superior to Ford.

Re:EGR

EGR is Exhaust Gas Recirculation. Basically, diluting the intake air with exhaust gas. It's intended effect is to lower combustion temperatures and therefore NOx (nitrogen oxide) levels. Everyone can thank the EPA for it. The system has been around for many years and many engine manufacturers use it (such as Detroit Diesel, Volkswagen, and Cummins). I had an '82 6.2l that had it. Some reasons many people don't like it is shorter engine oil maintenance intervals and performance and durability issues, especially if the EGR valve is not operating correctly. Unfortunately, it is the future.

Re:EGR

Don't forget the clogged intakes and gummed up engine internals due to sucking sooty exhaust back into the engine

Re:EGR

;D EGR will not be required for the 04.5 engine, maybe not even for 07, we can only hope! Now that I've been retired, I don't have my finger on the pulse quite as well, plus a 4-month 5er trip to shake down the truck and trailer has kept me out of touch. Retirement is wonderful

Re:EGR

John,

Thanks for the info...

I sure hope that turns out to be accurate information since that would mean I could get my flats boat paid off and get my finances better able to make the truck become a reality!
Kind of takes the pressure off as far as trying to get around the EGR thing immediately.

Regards...
