Dodge 04.5 CMP confusion

Dodge 04.5 CMP confusion
2004.5 5.9 Dually 4X4
Need some advice from the experts.
Start truck up and idles fine. As soon as I go to press the accelerator (1500 rpm) the motor bucks and chugs with a tremendous amount of smoke out the back. Smells like raw fuel. Let off of accelerator and eventually dies. Start back up and idles fine again. Showing P0341 cam sensor no reference signal.
The tach seems to be working just fine.
A forum search leads to checking the wiring behind the A/C.
I don't have a way to check rail pressure
Besides checking the wiring, does anyone have any insight to what could be causing this? Does the ECM use the CMP for injector timing? I thought it used the CKP. Could it be fuel control or the CP3 going bad?
