Timing Confusion

I hope someone can clear my timing confusion up. According to the Dodge Service manual, if the injection pump needs to be removed (i have to do this to install the tappet cover gasket), the procedure to re-install the injection pump is to set the motor at TDC using the timming pin, you then set the injection pump to TDC using its own timing pin. I can assume from the service manual that you are installing the injection pump with no degrees advanced?

I then read the following TSB. http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1994/18-10-94a.htm
According to this procedure, you first check to see what the existing timing is you measure the lift of the plunger in the injection pump using a dial indicator. You then can look on the side of the motor ( i have an automatic) and see what the number of degrees advance it is suppose to be and set the pump accordingly.

The confusion lies in the fact that the service manual says to set everything at TDC ( unless im mis-understood) and the TSB says to advance?

Re:Timing Confusion

I think I understand what you are perhaps misunderstanding!

The manual seems to be refering to new pump installation, that is one with no gear on the shaft. However if you are removing the pump from its mounting on the gear housing you would be pulling the gear off anyway. Now that I have confused the $hit out of you...the bottom line is you would have to start with the pump (itself) on TDC and then install it with the engine on #1TDC...just to know where you are, then set timing from there. If you lose both positions, you can find them again without much trouble. Be sure to have a GOOD engine TDC mark on the crank pulley......forget the pin! Hope that makes sense.

**New pumps have a tab to hold them in TDC position.

Michael

Re:Timing Confusion

Roll the motor over to true TDC using the valves to find that, stay away from that dang engine timing pin, once your at true TDC pull the pump plug and with a mirror and a light see if the pump timing pin is in the middle of the hole, if it needs to come up turn the motor over via the crank clockwise, or towards the pass side from under the motor, if it needs to drop then use the alternator nut to roll the motor backwards, when the timing pin is perfectly in the middle of the hole, pin the pump with the plug, (but before you do break the pump nut loose) install the timing pin, if you can turn it, it's not enguaged, if you can't put the plug nut on tight, it's not enguaged....so fix that with little movements in either direction. When you have the pump pinned look at the TDC mark you made on the balancer and see if it's on the mark or not, your pump is timmed on a stand and that timing is stamped on the pump indentification plate. When you install the pump after the job the pump is pinned so it's good now, before you install and tighten the nut roll the motor backwards then forward to tdc to take the gear slack out, if you want the timing advanced the back the motor up on the crank from TDC, the un-educated version is 3/8th inch is about 2.5 degrees.....now tighten the pump nut to 40 lbs or so after you spray the heck out of the shaft with brake cleaner while moving the gear around with one of the puller bolts, once you have the nut tightened a bit un-pin the pump and tighten the pump nut to 160 vise 150 or use 150 whatever floats your boat.

On the tappet(push rod) cover, sand all the paint off the lip and rough it up with 40 grit paper, then with a new gasket fill the gap with high temp RTV after cleaning both, put the gasket on then put a bead(small) were the gasket meets the cover on both sides, put big fat rubber bands around the hole cover to hold the gasket flush in the grove and let it set at least over night, then install with new washers on the bolts...cummins has some new ones that are great P/N 3900267 for the 12V. I had a cover that gave me fits and fixed it this way after pulling the pump/cover 4 times! Hope this helps.

Jim
