Dealer told me APPS sensor is going bad

This morning after I drove about .5 miles I came to a stop and when I pressed the pedal my truck did nothing. I move the peddal 5-6 time then it worked fine, so off to the dealer I went. The check engine light came on also. Well the dealer just called and said th APPS sensor is going bad and it is going to cost $827.00 to replace it. Does this sound right to you?? Sure sounds like BS to me. Truck has 72k miles on it. They also said I should have the injectors cleaned and the radiator fluid serviced. This sounds like even more BS

well mine went out on my 01 and too my surprise most people were trying to rebuild it, I am surprised they told you it didn't need a rebuild. The sensor can't be more than 100 bucks. All they have to do is drop the pan and valve body and wah lah there it is. 827 dollars

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
The injectors don't need cleaning. They run snake oil through the pump to do this. DON'T
Radiator flush and coolant replaced. I can see that as a routine service. The rust additives do deplete themselves in the antifreeze.
The APPS could well be that price through dealer. MIght check a Cummins dealer, or aftermarket sources. It does sound as a possibility for your complaint. IS that piece not warrantied by Dodge/Cummins for 100,000 mile.

The APPS is not in the trani. On my 04.5, it's on the left side of the engine, under that big plastic cover. But they do change location's for differant year's.

You need to fix your sig. I guess your truck is a 04. You can get the apps from cummins for right around $500, maybe a little more. Or, if you happen to be in good with a Dodge part's guy, you can get it for the same price. It come's with the whole big metal bracket. You change the whole assembly.

It's less than a hour job to change. I'd shop around just so you know.

The APPS is in the cab mounted on the accelerator pedal in an '05. Replacement entails replacing the entire pedal assembly, according to the service manual. It also says that removing the APPS from the pedal may ruin the APPS's calibration.

Is it different in an '04.5?

The APPS is located on the left side of my CTD just in front of the intake. Everything worked fine today. I am going to pull the apps cover this afternoon if weather permits. I just hate to buy a part that cost that much if it is not the real problem. Has anyone tried the capacitor modification to reduce noise going to the APPS?

$422 at my dealer for the part >>> I replaced it myself in about 20 minutes >> very easy but way over priced... dealer started out with a price of $509 but I argued and price shopped until I got the final price of $422 and change. don't waste your money paying the dealer $400 labor to turn the 10mm ratchet for 10 minutes when you can put the money into the fuel tank!!! That should give you almost a full tank!!! LOL

Am I to guess that the dealer is going to be the only place to get this part?? This sucks!! I only seem to have problem getting started. Once I get going I do not have any problems. I have had the problem 3 times in the last 6 months. How soon should I replace this part? I know I am gambling either way you look at it... Thanks for the help..

Dodge dealer, or Cummins.

You can reset it by disconnecting the batteries, do a search for the proceedure. This will limp it by. BUt if it's bad, it need's changed. It's only a matter of time before it will leave you straded. I got a sudden lunge while at a drive through. I almost hit the car in front of me.

What code's did you get. 2122, and 2121??

P2121 Pedal Position Sensor Conformance Error.

The APPS has two outputs for safety. According to the information I have, they should track each other with a specific voltage difference. I believe that when they don't, you get the conformance error.

My guess is a noisy potentiometer internally. They tend to wear first at the most common position, which would be zero throttle.

I would really like to get a hold of a bad 3rd gen APPS, so I could open it up and take a look inside.

I tried the "reset" ad I tried cleaning the conections and everything else I could think of... Mine went out little by little over about 1500 miles and then one day I am struggling to get it home and idled it for about the last mile and a half... Unfortunately there is nothing to clean up or check >> it is a rheostat that the throttle cable hooks to and it is simply ridicules how much they are asking for it even if it does come connected to the steel plate.
I checked with a Cummins distributor and they didn't carry it... I had to go to the dealer.
It is very simple to R&R >> It is right in front of the intake horn under the black plastic cover >> The hardest part is getting the little plastic clip on the front of that cover off because the Radiator hose is right in front of it... After that you just need a 10mm socket and small extension... Good luck if you decide to push it...

I wonder if I could just purchase a rheostat and fix it that way. Man if I could figure that out I could make some bucks$$$
