dealer says transmission slip is normal!!!
Sorry guys, but I have limited time to search this topic again!
I have a stock 2004.5 HO, 4x4, automatic transmission, 3.73 with 68,500 miles. The truck has had a good life, no heavy hauling, and has no power adders.
I noticed a slight "flare" or slip of 200-400 rpm right as the transmission locks up in overdrive. Usually happens under hard acceleration, such as highway entrance ramps. (NOT WHlLE "GRANDMA" DRIVING. It shifts firm and solid.)
So, with only 1,500 miles left on the warranty, I decided to take the truck to the dealership. I took the mechanic for a ride and he observed the slipping. He told me others have come in with the same problem. He said he's torn into these transmissions and found nothing abnormal. So his conclusion is: it's normal due to the hydraulics and complex dual actions in the transmission as it locks up in OD. He offered to take me for a ride in another auto to show me it's normal. But, no other 2003-2005's on the car lot. He recommend a band adjustment but the symptoms may not go away.
So, I drove away hoping my tranny doesn't crap out with 70,001 miles on the odometer!!! I'm thinking about driving 30 miles to another dealership to get a second opinion... unless this is NORMAL!
Is this normal with other 2004.5 automatics?

It is not normal. If you just started noticing it, then you know it is not normal for your truck either. If it is slipping while trying to lockup the TC, then a band adjustment is not going to do any good. I would try another dealer if you are wanting to keep a stock TC in the truck. Otherwise, get a beefed up TC and VB from one of the tranny builders.
P.S. Once your TC starts slipping, the crud it lets loose in the fluid will soon trash the tranny. I suggest you not wait until that happens.

I believe that I read somewhere that the 47RE would downshift briefly before going into OD, increasing the RPM - and mine DID, until I put in the DTT VB, now it's a straight - and strong - drop into OD under acceleration.

What you are describing as "slip" may not be the correct description. If you are referring to a drop of 200-400 rpms when the transmission locks up in OD this is normal. You are going from fluid drive to direct drive at the TC level. The extra load will normally drop the rpms at that point. With my upgraded TC and Trans the rpm drop at OD lockup is closer to 600rpms at this shift/lockup on hard exceleration.
The harder the exceleration the more noticable it is.
