The dealer is making me crazy
The dealer is making me crazy
To start off with, i took my truck in because it wasn't starting right. it took like 15 seconds before my truck would start. once it got started it seemed to run fine. when the dealer hooked up the scan tool, he could not communicate with the ecm. there was resistance between the ecm and obd port. I don't really understand electronics very well, so bear with me. He said at one point there was 40 ohms resistance to ground on the bus line. The original thought was that the wiring harness was bad somewhere. To try and isolate it, he unplugged all the controllers one by one. Once the last one got unplugged, the resistance went away. My truck still did not start right, and now I was getting three codes. It was saying injectors 1,2,and 3 were bad. That coupled with a test that showed I was getting too much fuel returned from my pump led the mechanic to determine my three injectors were bad so he replaced them. Guess what, did not fix it. He ran a compression test today thinking one or more of the cylinder rings could have been bad. And I still have the codes that say my three cylinders are not running. It still seems maybe that there is something electrical going on. I don't know if my ecm is bad or what. The dealership is out of guesses for now. They have been pretty good to me so far by only charging me 6 hours labor which includes all the tests and diagnosing, and even replacing the injectors. They have had my truck now since Jan 20th, and I really need it back. I'm sorry this is so long, but if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. If you have questions, I can try to answer them, but half of what the guy tells me I don't understand.
just a shot, have they checked the injector wiring harness, they are wired in two banks i believe 123 and 456, if wiring is shot on 123 they wont fire. I think if u even have a prob. with just 1 wire in the bank the whole bank doesnt work.

Did I read that right? since Jan 20th.. I would try a different dealer. I know you wernt looking for that answer but since Jan 20th???
Why are they charging you anything? 6hrs labor is still going to be about $560, and motor parts are covered for 5yrs/100K miles. I also agree with mini 14 and Bearhunter...anybody who can't fix a problem like that in over a month doesn't deserve your money.

I believe on the 04.5 there is a flash for long crank times/hard starting. I'm not sure if it applied to the 05 also. It would seem that if there is a short in the wiring they would concentrate on that first so they could read the ECM and get an accurate diagnosis before they started changing parts.
Adaminak, my truck came with a 70k warranty and I have 77k miles now. He has checked every wire from the ecm to the injectors, and they all seem to be fine. The first thing they wanted to do was reflash it because of a TSB and thats how they figured out there was no communication with the ecm.
05 trucks have 7yr 100k on the engine, 7/70 powertrain, if u bought it used u have to pay the $150 transfer fee...3rd owners have 5yr 100k engine only with paid transfer. They r only charging u 6 hrs labor because its covered under warranty, they are still ripping u off. all u have to pay is the $100 deductible.

I am asking now about the warranty. In the mean time does anyone know what the problem might be. the mechanic seems very competent, but if need to take it somewhere else i will, but for now i am trying to find some new lead as to what the problem is. If anyone can help with that it would be great.
Ive never paid someone for "trying" to fix my vehicle.
If they cant find the problem and fix it...they cant charge you more than a diagnostics fee. 6hrs labor..thats crazy. LOL I wouldve laughed at them and not paid.

I have seen inj. wiring harness be bad, & test good several times. No meter can replicate the pulse, & current that the inj. use when firing. However, if they can't establish communication with the ECM, there is another problem. That needs to be diagnosed, & fixed 1st. Have them hook up to another truck, & verify there isn't a problem with their scan-tool, then go after the comm failure.
I agree with the others. I would start at the ECM. I beleive ECM stands for Electronic Control Module. If the OBD (on board diagnostics)Port will not communicate with the ECM, there has to be a reason. He unhooks all of the contollers and the ohms fall to zero. That is because there is nothing left carrying the current. If all of the contollers are unhooked why would there be resistance. He is hoping the wire is grounding out on something and carrying the current through the rest of the truck. With the wires in a loom this is very doubtful. Did he go from the OBD Port to the end of the harness that plugs into the contoller? If he did he will get some resistance, it will be milliohms but there will be some there, if the harness is good. I would sure try and talk them into looking at that area of the truck. That just seems really strange that they would not look at that area. One last thing, I agree with the others, five or six weeks is plenty of time to fix the truck. You need to move it to a different dealer or shop. Good luck and let us know what happens.
Well thanks to you guys and no thanks to them, I found out my ecm and injectors are covered under the emissions warranty. They are going to pay for everything and replace the ecm tomorrow. the mechanic working on it is an older guy and it seemed like he was really being thorough. He isn't the kind to just change parts, he really wanted to know what happened. There was a truck in last year that was doing the same sort of thing and the guy that brought it in just told them to replace the wiring harness and ecm. It fixed the truck but it cost over $8k. I told them from the beginning i was not about to spend that kind of money. They would keep the truck for that kind of bill. there has also been a lot of little things that have happened: different tests etc. that i did not go on about because this thing would be 10 pages long if i went through 5 weeks of work step by step. I said they were being nice about it because they've got over 30 hours labor testing wiring etc. Maybe they don't know what they were doing but they do now. And thanks to your help, its not on my dime!
