Lightbulb Cummins in a 4000 lbs vehicle

What would it be like to have a new cummins in a vehicle that weighs half what our trucks do? Just think of a bombed out 500 horser with 1000 lbs torque? Is it possible? Anyone done anything close to it?

I think it would be awsome to watch. especially when he hits the brakes hard!!! It would have to be in a really small chassis and the weight of the cummins would make it front heavy. I watched a short vidio clip where a guy took a chev W-4 and removed the bed and drove it up to about 30 mph and hit the brakes, over she went nose to the ground. It was hillarious to watch.

I think somebody took a Cummins and stuffed it into a Dodge Dakota and made a run at the Bonnevile Salt Flats.......making a record speed run with it. Don't know the particulars, but I am sure somebody on here has some info on it.

That wasn't just SOMEBODY. It was Gale Banks and Banks Engineering. They currenly have the fastest pickup truck around and the sad thing is they drove it to the salt flats pulling their work trailer with all of the extra stuff they might need, put on the required tires ran the course to set the record then put back on street tires hooked up to the trailer and drove it home.
The other guys trailered their trucks and cars there and had to trailer them home because they couldn't keep up

That was an awsome artical that I read about the speed record. Fastest truck yet diesel or gas!!! They even stuck with the stock oil system in the Cummins. We all know that we must have an awsome oil flow system in these engines!

I'm sure there would be more suitable power plants, but if you could stand the rattle (and who here wouldn't love it?) some kind of mid engine all wheel drive vehicle setup for either rally racing or a baha-style event would be awesome! Mount the engine slanted and with a dry sump/shallow pan to lower it even more in the chassis you'd have a seriously low center of gravity. Tune it to about 700 lb/ft and some kind of serious constant variable single speed tranny---imagine 40psi rattling right behind your head WOT across the desert spinning all 4 at 100 mph! I'll take two.

There is an article in that new mag 'Diesel Power' where Bosch built a 1953 Corvette and put a BMW common rail diesel engine in it - It looks pretty sweet. Check it out if you havent yet.
