Crankcase vent filter for 05?
Was reading on another forum about the crankcase vent filter for a 2005 model. It gave the Cummins part number of 3957987 at Genos. I cannot find this filter on my 05. Can anyone post a picture or give me a little hint!

It is under the valve cover, cover. Remove the oil fill cap and the four bolts that hold the short cover to the main valve cover. The filter is right there.
Remove #1:
And locate #1 in this pic (that is the filter):

That thing probably never has any attention paid to it. Is there really even a "filter" inside of it? I always laughed at the guys at the service desk when they would hand me my reciept for my oil change (yes, dealer changed my oil until the warranty ran out) because it read "Lube oil and filter change $xx........Crankcase vent removal, inspection, cleaning....no charge." They never knew why I always laughed at that.......the vanity cover was never once removed until I removed it for the first time at 150k miles to check the valves!!!!! Who did they think they were kidding anyways!

Mine just clogged and my truck only has 71,000 miles on it. The way i knew it needed changing was that I had a constant smell of oil coming in the cab and I could see oil leaking all around the valve cover. Takes just 5 minutes to swap out and now I'm good to go again.
I've also read that you can pull it off your truck and submerse it in gas for a while and it will clean it up. Not sure if that works though...

I think mine was clogged or something, mine was using oil like mad. I changed it, now have driven over 1, 100 miles with loss of oil. I can't explain it any other way....

Well, this thread compelled me to go check mine. There is 190K miles on the OEM filter. I removed it and inspected it and blew through it and it still flows perfectly.

There's one big inlet to the filter and two smaller outlets. One takes the vapors out under the truck and the other grabs the actual oil residue from the vapors and returns it to the crankcase. That's the side that tends to clog up.

The seal on my oil filler cap was a source of a small leak for me. I had never seen that style of oil cap leak before but sure enough, it was. I replaced the o-ring on the cap and all was good again. It actually leaked in between the valve cover and the plastic top decorative cover for vent filter and then down the upper cast valve cover. That made it look like the filter or hoses or valve cover was leaking. It wasn't until I removed the plastic cover and degreased everything and drove the truck for a bit without the plastic cover installed that I saw the source of the leak was from where the cap threads into the cast upper valve cover!
