I think it would be a good idea, although I doubt the dealer would do it.

Dealers should have an oscilloscope to watch rail pressure fluctuations on problem trucks.

Had lift pump go out Thanksgiving weekend at 28K on my 2004.5. Got truck back after 2-3 days and Wed this week the 21st and the CP3 fried. Stranded again till parts come in this next tuesday. Hope that is all that goes wrong. Did find out if you complain enough DC will rent you a vehicle for the duration of the repair. Only problem is got a car that won't pull my work trailer but guess it's still better than walking.

What actually happened that left you stranded? Many of us on here have posted that ours are leaking, but no performance or stranding issues.

Truck just quit, ran out of fuel. According to the dealer the "High pressure pump" (CP-3 ?) failed telling the in tank pump that it didn't need any fuel and shut off the pump in the tank and therefore the truck ran out of fuel with 3/4 tank. I spoke to the tech working on it and he told me he tried, per Star instructions, replacing the APS first and still same ptoblem so the next step was the pump. I'm at the point I don't care, just get the truck running. Each time this happens it costs me days work at $120 per day at least. Getting very frustrating.

I am looking at buying an 03 HO 6 speed Cummins DRW QC today (coming from a Ford PSD) and this may sound like a dumb question, but I need to know all I can before I make the purchase....BUT, what is the CP3, lift pump, etc....

"According to the dealer the "High pressure pump" (CP-3 ?) failed telling the in tank pump that it didn't need any fuel and shut off the pump in the tank and therefore the truck ran out of fuel with 3/4 tank."

The dealer is WRONG. The CP3 doesn't tell anything it needs fuel. The ECM gives the FCA a pulse width and the ECM expects rail pressure. Reasons for not having rail pressure include no lift pump, failed CP3, leaking rail over pressure valve or massive injector leaks.

"I spoke to the tech working on it and he told me he tried, per Star instructions, replacing the APS first and still same ptoblem so the next step was the pump."

Hope they got it right.

mine died on the way home from VT to NJ with 3/4 of a tank as well. The dealer says its the lift pump. Should i be worried when i go to pick it up again that it wont happen on the way home or should i have them replace the CP3 also? And of course they wont be able to do anything untill next wed. not even order the stuff~!~!!!~!!~

I dunno. I don't own a Dodge truck.

Do you guys think the lift pumps just up and die or do they operate marginally for a while, starving the CP3 ?

You are going to replace the lift pump with an aftermarket pump when the truck gets home, right ? To prevent you from losing use of your truck again.

See how much frustrations could be saved by putting a good lift pump on BEFORE the stock one fails ? I guess I thought everyone understood this.

"BUT, what is the CP3, lift pump, etc"

Lift pump is the electric fuel pump that moves diesel fuel from the tank to the pump on the engine.

The CP3 is the pump on the front of the engine that pressurizes the fuel to injection pressures in the fuel rail for injection by the injectors.

Re... "coming from a Ford." The Cummins is an awesome engine. Do not be afraid. All it needs is a little lift pump and it will run forever.

Thanks. I am not afraid, as I know that all of our beloved Diesel's have thier own problems. I just like to do my research first before I jump into anything, and that is why I am staying away from the 6.0 PSD. How expensive is it to replace the lift pump, CP3 and such when they go bad. What are some of the symptoms? Thanks

Someone else can answer these questions. I've posted way more than my fair share on this topic and I don't even have a lift pump problem.

I think someone should take all the info in these posts and put it into a FAQ or something. I see a lot of lift pump/CP3 issues on this board and the same questions keep getting asked over and over for the same problems.

I know you have to be worn out answering questions on the subject but because of these few threads the last few days I'll be more than prepared for my appointment Monday morning to have my leaking cp3 looked at. Just in two short days I've learned a tremendous amount on the subject and 90% of it from your posts so thanks for sharing...and to the others that contributed thanks also...Merry Christmas, LCH
