Couple of 03 ram 6spd transmission questions...

1) I am getting a whining noise most noticable when in 6th gear at speeds above 50mph. The whine becomes most annoying at 62mph and stays around until 75mph (as fast as I have gone so far). The whine goes away when you leave off the throttle and comes back again when you are traveling/maintaining speed on the throttle or accelerating.

2) I am also getting a relief in the whine when I coast down a hill (see #1 above), but sometimes I get a wierd noise from the transmission like something is slipping, you can feel the slip in the transmission shifter....any thoughts?

Hummin,
That does not sound good I have no such noise on mine. The noise you describ sounds like gear whine caused by low lubricant. My advice is to get it to your dealer as soon as possible.
The Boss Hog

Driving in the Rig while the noise is happening...if I keep my head forward the noise is prevalent...if I turn my head 90 degress toward the passenger it "seemingly' goes away.

I am getting concerned that no one else has this "whine" while driving in 6th gear.

That is typical of a carriage bearing in the rear end. Not good. Check fluid yourself.

YEah, I had those go bad already...this seems a little more local to the cab.

Although I could be wrong.

I am hoping the dealership checked the rear axle for fluid prior to me bringing it home...especially when I requested the axle fluids be checked and the salesdriod noted it was part of the procedure.

Now you aren't talking about turbo whine are you? Mine whines nice and loud on uphill and towing and totally quiet downhill. When you really get on it it sounds like a semi coming up on you and once you back off it quiets down quite a bit. The older cummins engines were loud enough with engine noise that you never heard the turbo whine muchunless you bombed it a lot, but now with our quiet engines you do noticeably hear the turbo.

Monte

I towed my boat for the first time today and the turbo whin has my ears ringing. It is at the exact RPMs you talked about. I know some like to hear it but I don't. It was a great pull.
I know what a turbo sounds like (owned 6 turbo cars and 2 turbo trucks now)...definitely not like the whine I am hearing.

The whine I am hearing is gears or bearings.

More like a bad rear lash setup.
Bad rear carrier bearing.

Bad tranny bearing
Steep (almost straight)cut tranny gears on 6th which a whine would be natural
or
Low on oil somewhere.

Will find out Friday AM
