cost of ATF+4

What in the world happened to that stuff? Is it gold?

I swear I used to get Mopar ATf+4 from a dealer for $16/gallon, then it jumped to something like $25/gallon. I just bought some today and the dealer charged $33/gallon!!

I'm within 5,000 miles of the warranty, so maybe next time I'll look at non-Mopar alternatives? Any suggestions? Can I drain the pan and mix in other stuff with the Mopar ATF?

I haven't looked lately, but last I knew you could get Mopar ATF+4 at Walmart for around 3 or 4 dollars a quart.

It's $4.42/qt at Walmart around here. Not bad for full-synthetic. You won't find anything cheaper, except for Supertech (Don't even) I also saw Valvoline at Autozone for $4.95. Avoid the Multi-make fluids; they are basically Dexron/Mercon.

Why the "Don't even on the Supertech stuff"? Supertech ATF+4 should be the same ATF+4 that sits right next to it in the Mopar bottle. It's licensed by Mopar so it has to be formulated the same. I'll keep using it at a couple bucks per quart unless you can show me it's not what it should be.

I do.

They should be the exact same thing. ATF+4 is just a highly refined conventional fluid that is called synthetic. All ATF+4 should be the same, except those companies like Amsoil who will add a little extra something to say it's better, when in reality all you need is the licensed ATF+4.

I have used what ever kind of ATF+4 I could find, mostly advanced auto brand, for more than 30,000 miles and my truck shifted and ran fine. It slips now in lock-up because of Beta4.4 on the smarty. Towing 11,000 on level 1(before they published even level 1 was crazy power) through Cumberland MD. I don't think it would have mattered what fluid was in it at that point. LOL

Probaby close enough as it has to meet +4 Chrysler specs.BUT if in doudt ask or read here www.bobistheoilguy.com I'm NOT in the mood to go looking it up or asking at the moment on the oil site. You gotta be in the mood for Bob is the oil guy. The full syns like Amsoil,Mobil,Royal Purple I'm sure are somewhat differant then the lower priced Atfs but hey could be wasting a TON of bucks on them as they MIGHT be the same as the lower priced But I doudt it.

Ok after some reading on Bob the oil guy , It seems to be that

To meet Chrysler ATF+4, the fluid must be a group III basestock with a specific Lubrizol additive package.

Chrysler specifies the exact chemical make-up for ATF+4 and to be an approved (licensed) ATF+4 blender, an oil company has to follow that recipe. There are currently only four licensed blenders, and the ATF+4 they each produce is chemically identical because the exact same ingredients are used by each company to produce the fluid.

What's this means is that the Mopar branded ATF+4 could come from the same blender that makes the other ATF+4. Same fluid, different label on the bottle.

So go figure ?
