coolant leaks
coolant leaks
i have a 2007 diesel 5.9L which will leak coolant after i drive it a short distance, meaning the engine has not reached operating temperature.
i have read some threads on here about a leak which is on the passenger side of the vehicle and drips down over the bell housing.
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...t=coolant+leak
i believe this is caused by the pressure in the cooling system and the thermostat not being opened.
just yesterday I haven't drove my truck for three days expect one time to the store to pick something up which is only a five mile round trip. well i noticed that there was a puddle underneath the truck.
i removed the radiator cap and found that there was pressure built up. after releasing the pressure the leak seamed to have stopped. because this morning the leak looks as if it is starting to dry up.
has anyone else tried releasing the pressure to see if it will stop from leaking?

I replaced the hose and clamps that were leaking.
The cold weather shrinks the metal pipes and the rubber hose and worm screw clamps cannot compensate completely for that shrinkage. Then the coolant leaks. The new hose is a silicon type material IIRC and the clamps are spring clamps.
It's like a $10 repair but a real doozy

As Shorts mentioned, the best bet is to replace the hose and the clamps with the following parts. I have included the Dodge part numbers and the Cummins part numbers in case you have a Cummins dealer nearby. The new hose has a smaller inside diameter than the old foil wrapped piece. The new style clamps apply constant grip around the hose under all conditions.
Dodge Hose - 05179114AB
Dodge Clamps - 05179115AA (pkg. of 2 needed)
or
Cummins Hose - 4939438
Cummins Clamps - 4930327 (pkg. of 2 needed

i was putting my injectors back in today and noticed a plug on the head was leaking. it was going down the right side of the engine, riding on top of the oil pan rail, to the rear, down to the bellhousing and on the ground.
hope this helps, it's not the first time i have found leaks down the side of the block and dripping off the rear bell.
