cold weather startup (50*to 20*)
cold weather startup (50*to 20*)
This year my truck starts a bit different in cold weather. New batteries, different turbo, fuel system or beta program could all be affecting this. What happens is the truck cranks quickly and fires off as quick as a 12 valve in cold weather, right off the start, but as soons as it cranks it sputters once then idles fine. Now when it gets colder when the 1000 rpm high idle kicks in, the truck will lope, real long lopes not like a cam, enough that you can feel it and see it move the truck back and forth. Been letting it go for awhile, but curiosity keeps eating at me. Any of ya'll go through this, or think it would be normal?

It usually needs to be in the teens and not plugged in before it sputters a little, but I've never had it lope. Of course I've only got the Smarty and everything else is basically stock.
Mine seems to start a little slower(when not plugged in) when the weather has been cooler (high20s to low 30s is the worst weve had so far) Its a slow crank for a second, then its fine. I have had a slightly rougher idle sometimes at a cold start(when not plugged in) just for the first few minutes(if I dont enable the high idle)
BUT my truck is pretty much stock 'cept for exhaust, air intake, smarty(revo level 3)
Ive been thinking about trying level 2 in the when its colder out, to see if taking the added timing out has any effect on the idle when cold.

Yeah I don't have the adj high idle, just the one that automatically comes on when ambient temps are below 36* (for me anyway). And I don't have the plugin, so never used it to see if it would help. Coldest its got here was 24*.
I plug mine in, so maybe that's why it starts up just fine. I have noticed the grid heater can make it stumble a little when it comes on. I just figured it's the instant load the heater puts on the alternator making it do that.

x2. Lets see. RIP, my vote was for the short crank, idels fine and thats if I forget to plug it in when its -20 below out. Cranks a second longer, but not much. But, I have had it twice in 3 years to where after I start it and the high idel cranks up, it sounds like it has a moster cam. MMM MMM MMM MMM. But, it doesn't shake the truck, you can just really hear it. Don't make fun of my impression. Would also like to know why it does it.

Well it started up fine this morning, seems to be directed to the more cold temps like below 40*. I will catch it slippin eventually though, when I do I will get it on video.
It started normal this morning, wasn't cold enough, but got a video anyways. Truck actually sounds good on video, you can hear that 62/71ss wheezin
. I will post another video when it gets colder.
You can hear the effects of the grid heater when I idled it up a little.

As cold as 0* (low of -15 the same night) since I've owned it (2 weeks now). It started first shot on bad batteries, took about 5-10 seconds to crank, and idled a bit lopey for mayeb 5 seconds.
New batteries as of 2 nights ago, low of 0*, very quick crank and a smooth idle after 2-3 seconds.
68k miles and no previous owner info, could be wear on the cp3 or the injectors I spose.
