Did any trucks come with the cold weather startup from the factory?

I have a late build '02, and was wondering if they cold weather startup was ever installed at the factory. When it's really cold, my truck seems to hint at idling up a little bit. It's never idled way up, though, or engaged the 3-cylinder mode.

Is it possible I already have this on my truck? I bought it new in Aug '02.

What do I need to tell the knuckle-draggers at Dodge to get them to enable it?

Good luck.

You pretty much have to hold the technicians hand and gently walk him through the procedure.

The fact that it's already in the program but just needs to be enabled doesn't seem to make sense to them.

I've tried 3 times and it still doesn't work.

How far back does it go? Is it on the 98.5 24 valvers as well? Would be nice to have. Thanks

I believe you need to have the computer reflashed with the program up till 2000 or 2001 (?)

I'm pretty sure 2001's and 2002's will already have the program in there, just disabled.

Not sure on 2000's and under

After reflashing with the program, it still needs to be enabled.

Here's a link to the TSB.

When I called the dealer here the Service Rep. didn't have a clue as to what I was talking about. Neither did his Shop Foreman. I printed a copy of the TSB and took it in with me - They still seemed rather surprised and said they had never heard of a Cold Weather Program ??? (really inspires confidence!) but they managed to get it right the first time - and it was covered by the warranty! It was installed but not enabled on my truck. Talk real slow and take them pictures and instructions - that seemed to work for me! Good Luck!

Re:Did any trucks come with the cold weather startup from the factory?

I went in to the local dodge dealership today and asked abought the high idle warm up. They said that they had never heard of this before but did not act suprised to hear of such a thing. They said to bring the tsb # in and they would do it for around $40. I told him I wasent shure if it was in the original 24 valves or not, he said if not they will flash it in and enable it. He looked at me a litle funy when I mentioned the 3cyl thing. Hopefuly I can get it in next week. I whent to school to be a mechanic, never went to work as one though.Ive been a CNC Machinest ever sence the day I graduated so Ive forgotten more than I learned, but Ive been racking my brain trying to figure out how running on 3 cyl could make it heat up faster. So how does that work?

My 03 had it already enabled. It works most of the time at 32 but always at 27 and lower. I havent had the cylinders drop during warm up though. It has always ran at 1000 rpm on all 6

Re:Did any trucks come with the cold weather startup from the factory?

I Had a different sort of thing happen late last night concerning the cold start program. We had some colder weater with freezing rain and the truck had been driven for better than 30 miles. I had to stop and wait for 2 wreckers to remove a wrecked 18 wheeler from the roadway and while waiting the idle speed ramped up to 1000 rpm as it does cold BUT coolant temperature was 200 degrees and the IAT I can only speculate but should be somewhere in the 30 degree range. I was under the assumption that either the IAT range being sufficent or the ECT would not allow the idle to speed up..maybe not! It did return to idle normally on its own. No problem with this at all just that its a little different from what I have been getting..

Re:Did any trucks come with the cold weather startup from the factory?

In a nutshell it helps the engine warm up a little quicker by rasing the idle to around 1000 rpm when the outside temp is near 30 degrees give or take a couple degrees.

Although extended cold start idle is discouraged due to low combustion temps and the effects of that this is a better alternative

I think 2001 and up have the program in the ECM.

1998.5 through 2000 need the program flashed into the ECM and enabled.

2001 and 2002 need it enabled for it to work
(comes disabled from the factory)

2003 and 2004 don't need it enabled, as it comes that way from the factory, the owners manual even has a section on it so owners aren't surprised by it (even though they still are)
