Cold start under hood popping noise

Hi all,

I just bought a used 05 2500 with 186k miles. Picked it up in Ohio this Friday. Stayed with my parents over the weekend and the truck started fine on Saturday and Sunday morning. Came back home to WV last night. Went out and started the truck this morning. Truck started fine just like the other days. Then I noticed a regular popping / clicking noise coming from the front. Opened the hood to have a look around. The noise was coming from somewhere on the front of the engine in 1-2 second intervals. It was a loud enough sound I could hear it easily from about 25 feet away on my porch. I'm pretty sure it had something to do with the colder temps I see here in WV. It was about 25 here this morning and it was over 40 in Ohio this weekend when I didn't hear the sound. Either way I wasn't too concerned about it since I was pretty certain it wasn't an internal issue. Went ahead and let the truck idle for a bit then drove to work. When I got to work the engine had warmed up. Jumped out and listened and the sound was gone.

Read some posts about the A/C compressor making sounds when it's bad. Any case that's what is going on here? I did have the defroster on this morning and I hadn't used it prior.

My compressor engages and disengages more than it should every now and then. When it happeneds it does it about every 2-4 seconds. That could be what you are hearing. It's not really a popping noise though.

Michael-
Yeah, my prior 05 did what you are talking about. This noise was definitely not the normal clutch sound I remember from my other truck. If I would have had more time I would have inspected it closer.
I won't get a chance to see if it does it tomorrow since I dropped it off for an alignment after work tonight.

Any other thoughts on what it might be folks?

O alright Toupee...Well I don't have any other ideas at the moment but will keep it in mind, maybe i'll think of something.

One thing that just came to mind. probably not right but it wouldn't happen to be an exhaust leak would it???
