Clutch Install

I am looking to put in a new clutch. Probaly a south bend. I am pretty good with a wrench and have installed a couple of auto jeep trannys. How difficult is a clutch install on the G56? My stock clutch is starting to slip.

Same process just everything is bigger,,,, I just helped my bud install one in his 2WD,,, 07 mega cab took us about 1.5-2.0 hours,,,, we have all airtools, a lift, rolling floor jack, get the Hydraulics upgrade while you are there,,, he's running the Predator also,,, same deal started to slip in the higher gears and progressively got worse,,,,

Just make sure you read the instructions....shop that installed mine forgot to remove a spacer on the crank and caused a vibration; the trans had to come out again to fix it correctly. And do whatever you have to, to protect the shift tower boot, they are easily torn and the dealer parts dept. is mighty proud of 'em...$103.00 worth of proud!

Did mine myself, my son only helped yank and put the tranny back into place, took me a weekend.

Get a good HD tranny jack. I'd take the transfer case off, it's easier to pos'n the tranny on the jack with it gone.

You'll need long extensions to get at the top tranny to motor bolts, it'll be easier if you remove the trans x-member bolts and lower the tranny a bit for more access and easier to get at the top bolts holding on the transfer case too.

The stock flywheel is a dual mass one, the bolts holding it on go in from the engine side, there's a plate on the passenger side of the motor you remove to access them. The flywheels are heavy, be careful removing the old one, placing the new one.

You'll need to upgrade the hydraulics too.

Love my SB OFE BTW...

good luck!

No problem, thought of a couple more things.
Hardest part is lining up the clutch putting it back in. I drove the front up onto ramps, then jacked up the rear and put on jack stands to make it level, you'll still need the tranny on an angle but it won't be as bad.

Make sure the tranny is in gear putting it back in to help line up the splines by turning the output.

Good couple of Post's Fisher Guy!!!! yes a long 1/2" drive extension 24-36" and an impact swivel type socket for the tranny bell housing bolts is invaluble,, It seems like My bud also had a little jacking device he put in a hole on the passenger side of the bellhousing that engaged the Flywheel to turn the motor over to remove some of the bolts,,, cant remember which ones though its been a couple of years

No problem, glad to help.

The motor turns pretty easily really, weird considering the compression a diesel has. I turned mine by hand.
(I used a 3/8 ratchet though on those tranny bolts though!)

I am installing my OFE tomorrow a.m. Should I remove the flywheel bolts first or take out the tranny first. What do you use to turn the motor to pull out the 8 flywheel bolts.
