Clunk noise from rearend
Clunk noise from rearend
I have 18K on the truck, and I do not tow that much. I am starting to get a loud clunk from the rear end when the tranny up and down shifts. It does not happen all of the time, so is this a problem that is known?

This does not sound like the exhaust hitting anything (what would it be hitting anyway?). It sounds pretty close to a u-joint, beacse even in traffic and going from 1st to 2nd at a slow speed it happens at the same time the tranny shifts...no delays.
My 2003 CTD does the same thing....only in stop and go trffic when the tranny shifts from first to second and you let your foot off the gas to stop. The 2500 never gets above 10-15 miles per hour.
Anyone else??

my exhaust was hitting on my truck. the clamp before the muffler was just touching the crossmember when the engine torqued. i have a little bit of a clunk in my driveline but last time i was under there, the u-joints were ok, it looks like the clunk was the rear diff pinion backlash. might be a little high, but i'll see when i change the rear diff oil and look at the pattern on the gears. if it looks good, i'll leave it as is... if it doesn't look good, then to the dealer i shall go with it. [hoping for the first one though, it doesn't really bother me]

I have a 2004 Dodge Cummins1 ton single wheel with a 6 speed and the clunk is terribly annoying to me. The dealer said that was normal. I asked him why didn’t the last 10 Dodge trucks that I had both in diesel and gas didn’t do it. Of course his reply was that they made some improvements. In short they would not admit that there is a problem. This was my 1st service so I will just bring it up again at the next oil change. Oh, they had to add oil to the rear differential as it was not filled from the factory and not caught during the PDI.
And the lousy paint is another matter.

Well, he is right. It doesn't happen when I stop less aggressively, but that doesn't mean it is normal. I too will just keep an eye on it and bring it up when/if I ever have to go back again.
On the bright side, they ordered two weighted power steering hoses to take care of my steering wheel vibe that I didn't know I had. Service manager said I had some vibes going on when he drove it and he wanted to take care of that for me. I asked him if he was feeling OK.
